Make me into a game they can play without retaliation. The round starts with a slight argument about the old days or whatever. How Uno used to not have so many rules and could end quickly. My grandma thinks I’m taking years to end. They break bread to fellowship the shuffle. Arranging my cards as they please fit. Handing me out for the bidding. Forgetting about all the bad things for just a round and doesn’t that sound like a black family thing? To replace card games with trauma so you don’t feel so empty handed? To use me for a coping mechanism. This game be their salvation. And as I look across this table I go into defense mode. Where did my sister get all these pluck fours? Plucking my scabs and everyone laughs at the bloodshed? Ridding me of the only deck I have? My mother always finding a way to skip over me. Skip a birthday, a gathering, a graduation, a life. Granny loves changing these colors. All soft and purple then raging red. Switching cards and shit. Granny says only white folk do that. We play with the hand we were given. Switch back. All these Anglo Saxon rules. “Stay trying to make another dollar,” she says And I’m starting to believe her. I’m beginning to see how they love to Uno out of my life. That’s why they enjoy playing this game. That way they can use me for what I have all while leaving. Use me to hurt one another. To reverse the play. Ironic how the last card stand ing is the wild card. How now anything can happen. And nobody even knows what they’re doing to me. Slowly taking all my stuff. Uno teach me how to be the first with the last. And isn’t that the greatest pre dicament of them all? Be out of plays. Uno and never get out. To lose. Everything. Every time.
