Our chapters chose the June 17th movie date because it marked the ex act anniversary of when the unthinkable happened. National headlines blazed the story: Churchgoers Gunned Down During Prayer Service in Charles ton, South Carolina. After a 21-year-old white su premacist opened fire in the church, nine African Americans lay dead, leav ing their families and the nation to grapple with this senseless act of terror. Marking the fourth an niversary of the event, the film’s executive producers are NBA All-Star Stephen Curry and Oscar-winner Viola Davis. “Emanuel” is the official documen tary of the “Charleston Church Shooting” and the untold story of the heal ing that followed. The documentary powerfully weaves the history of race relations in Charleston, the significance and impact of Mother Emanuel Church, and the hope that some how emerges in the after math. The movie features intimate interviews with survivors and family mem bers. This is a poignant story of justice and faith, love and hate, and exam ining the healing power of forgiveness. Minus the movie’s pro duction and distribution expenses, all resulting rev enue will be donated to the families of the victims who lost their lives. Massey families from across the country gather for reunion SUBMITTED ARTICLE The sun was shining brightly on Winston-Salem the weekend of June 14-16 to welcome Massey families from various cities and states across the country. The family members gathered at the beautiful Haw thorne Inn and Conference Center where they enjoyed activities and a meet and greet. The hospitality suite was filled with members and friends who drifted in and out from as far away as California and Maryland, and closer by Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee, as well as North and South Carolina and Virginia. There was food, fun and games and an opportunity to meet and greet “kin folks” and friends that we didn’t know or haven’t seen for some time. Saturday morning and afternoon was T-shirt day, filled with activities such as bowling, arts and crafts or just relaxing. The evening event was a special banquet dedicated to our deceased founder, Mose Massey, and to the fathers, who also received Father’s day cards and gift bags. Families were recognized from the family tree of Wash and Fannie Massey. Other recognitions were the ones who traveled the farthest: cousins Kevin Carroll, an actor from Hollywood, Calif., and DeAnne, with baby, and sister Kecia Massey, from Vallejo, Calif. The old est member present was Gilbert Massey, son of Mose Massey, founder, 91-1/2 years old, from Lexington, and the youngest was little Mekhi, 7 months old, from Valle jo, Calif. First and second place trophies were given to Rev. Bessie Massey of Winston-Salem and Diane Stand field of Salisbury, who was also the first to win the word search game. Massey family members at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church on June 16 Photos were taken by Reginald and Sharron Smart of Virginia Beach, Va. The rest of the evening was dancing the night away with music by Cedric and Sandra Branch. Sunday, everyone assembled at the Morning Star Mis sionary Baptist Church for morning service. The sermon was by Rev. Dean Smith, associate minister, where the pastor is Rev. Dr. Dennis Leach Sr. The message, “A Father’s Message to His Children,” Proverbs 7:1-5, was very inspiring. After service a repass was given. We were blessed to have another wonderful reunion and hope to see one another next year in Lexington, N.C. For information, contact Carrie Robinson 336-926-3855.
