The business portion ot the town of Garfield, Col , was des troyed by fire on the 31st; a num ber of persons were injured one fatally by the explosion of 600 pounds of giant powder. "A $100 counterfeit note is said to be in circulation. Poor people will do well to be on their guard when accepting money of that denomination. Fresno county, Cal., is making a canal 100 feet wide, from King's river, to irrigate 30,000,000 acres of dry and worthless desert. ''The fat girl," 17 years old, weighing 517 pounds, died at Baltimore a few diys ago. She was married a few weeks since and was passing the honeymoon in the city in w hich she died. She ws from Michigan. Texas, reports - nine-tenths of its cotton crop picked and one half marketed; Tennessee, one half '-picked---and one-third mar keted; Mississippi and Louisiana, two-thirds picked and two-fifths marketed; Georgia, nine-tenths picked; Arkansas, one-fourth picked and one-fifth marketed; Alabama, 90 per cent picked and 50 per cent, marketed; the acre age of the States mentioned is about the same as last year, but the yield is from zo to 40 per cent less.
