For J. E. Holmes
James E. Holmes, 88, died Wed
nesday morning at 8 o’clock in
Good Hope Hospital in Erwin of
a stroke of paralysis. He was a na
tive of Benson.
A funeral service was conduct
ed Thursday in Benson Methodist
Church with burial In Roselawn
Cemetery. The Rev. I. T. Poole,
the Rev. J. D. Capps and the Rev.
T. B. Stone officiated.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Mamie Holmes five daughters,
Mrs. Clarence Julian of Erwin,
Mrs. Sammie Belleno of Worcester,
Mass., Mrs. Lloyd Johnson of Wen
dell and Mrs. Robert Tart and Mrs.
P. D. Lucas, both of Benson; five
sons, Milton of Winston-Salem.
Charles E., Ray and Howard of
Benson and Robert of Selma; a
brother. John W. Holmes of Route
3, Benson; 19 grandchildren and
two greatgrandchildren.

Joseph Langdon
Funeral services were conduct
ed Thursday afternoon in Reho
beth Primitive Baptist Church
for Joseph Andrew Langdon, 78,
of Route 1, Benson, who died
Wednesday morning at the home
of his son, Archie Langdon, after
a lingering illness. Elder Shepard
Stephenson and Elder J. T. Lewis
officiated. Burial was in the church
cemetery.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs.
Shepard Carroll; two sohs, Archie
R. and Willie C. Langdon, both of
Route 1, Benson; two sisters, Mrs.
J. A. Barbour of Route 1, Smith
field, and Mrs. Walter Cook of Er
win; four brothers, R. A. and Wil
lie C. Langdon, both of Route 1,
Benson, M. E. of Route 3, Benson,
and A. H. Langdon of Raleigh; 14
grandchildren and four greatgrand
children.

ARREST ON TIP
An anonymous tipster who said
she wanted to repay the city for
opening a new hospital for nar
cotics addicts tofortned the squat)
last night that the ring operated
from a Times Square telephone
booth.
When the tipster disclosed that
a “pretty blonde” was Involved in
the ring, Spinosa and Valente
called in Laurette McDonnell,
“mystery women" of the narcotics
squad who has been the nemesis
of drug peddlers for several years.
Miss McDonnell, whose attrac
tive face is never photographed be
cause of her undercover work,
joined Spinosa and Valente In a
vigil near the telephone booth.
Another pretty operative was
called to pose as a model and ad
dict and when Schonbaum and
Miss Lane appeared at the booth
she purchased a quantity of heroin
from them.
FOUND NEEDLES IN BRA
Then the detectives followed
Schonbaum and the dancer to the
subway station. Miss Donnell
took the woman .into custody as
the two detectives wrestled with
Schonbaum.
Miss McDonnell searched the
dancer' and said she found three
hypodermic* needles In her bras
sier e.
They returned to the telephone
booth where Miss Lane removed
a key to a subway locker. In the
locker the detectives found a hypo
dermic needle and a one pound can
of heroin worth about $65,000.
