Gary Long, Pastor Spring Branch Baptist Church For a long time now, we in America have been viettans of ner vous activity. Both the days of work and nights of recreation have been loud and noisy. It jg bad enough to be besieged daily with deafening assaults, but there is something much more disturbing about our modern busy life. It is the illusion that nervous efforts and screeching mechanisms are unmistakable indications of achievement. International condi tions have only exaggerated this regrettable state of affairs. It is unfortunate that we are con demned to listen to all the rau cous noises which assail us day and night. But to come to the con clusion that church itself is most successful when it is most noisy is nothing less than tragic. That is why Jesus spent so much time in the quietness of spiritual communion. It was in this way he discovered the secret of noble liv ing. When he went out into the wilderness at the beginning of his ministery. he met with temptation. But in the silence of those days, preceding the assaults on his soul, he had summoned power and strength by means of which to overcome, Ha had already-gainetb the victory. If the Master was compelled to use silence, what of us? If he was so keenly aware of this need In a slow-moving country of the Near East nineteen hundred years ago, what of us who live in this clamo rous modern age? We seem never to be able in this decade to have a moment to listen to birds sing, to Pick a daisy, to pat a dog on its head, or say a cheery hello to a friend. Let our word for today be, “Be still and know that I am God.” McDonald Heads Subdistrict MYF A Lillington youth, Duane Mc Donald, has been elected presi dent of the Cape Pear Subdistrict MYP.
