Powell today announced the smashing of a burglary ring that be said operated across three Southern states. Powell said three persons were taken into custody in Virginia and ! fugitive warrants were issued for “some others.” He said the ring operated in Virginia and the Car ollans doing a brisk business in stolen goods. Powell identified the suspects as Luther Junior Durham, Alice Anne Fritts and Myrtle Ward Easter. Durham and Alice Fritts were being held at Fredericksburg and the Easter woman at Han over. (UPD — Hur ricane Edith swept across the tip of the Dominican Republic today and into the Atlantic where wea thermen said it would miss Flo rida, Cuba and the western Baha mas. Edith, the season’s fifth and fiercest tropical storm, lost some of its power in crossing over the estern tip of the Dominican Re public during the night but chief hurricane forecaster Gordon Dunn said in Miami it was still consi dered a dangerous hurricane.
