ilq I fJL J* n: i fc. fL»: 0 i U fU tti "You Should Know” By C. Gtrj Lonr, Pastor Sprint Branch Baptist Church Thanksgiving has become In many ways one of our most char ge. acteristic national institutions. Whatever it may have started out tc be, we now have in our calen dar a unique and colorful holiday that has thoroughly sold Itself to the American people. 0 Its recognizable components 5 constat of a long week-end, pro ,ft clamatlon about prosperity, the gathering of the clan, a feast of [c turkey, cranberries and pumpkin . pie, followed by football on tele vision. What all this has to do with giving thanks to the Heavenly Father is not quite clear. The citi zenry increasingly resists the idea that Thanksgiving should be view ed as a “religious” occasion. Our culture accepts it rather as a pleasant interlude between the seasons of leaf-raking and snow shoveling. Thanksgiving apart from recog nition of God in the ordinary things of life is no Thanksgiving at all. Dinners eaten end leisure enjoyed without a word of praise to “the Lord who daily loadeth us with benefits” blunt the very purpose of Thanksgiving, a day which should include church-go- [ teg anfl prayer. No finer Thanksgiving exper ience could come to America than for the almost 300 million of us to sit down quietly and read or listen to the 100th Psalm. The Bible teaches us that the attitude of gratitude is both delicate and mysterious. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” I close with the following lines by Alexander Blackburn. “What makes a nation great? Not serri ed ranks with flags unfurled. Not armored ships that gird the world, Not hoarded wealth nor busy mills, Not cattle on a thou sand hills, Not sages wise, nor schools, nor laws. Not boasted deeds in freedom's cause — All these may be, and yet the state in the eye of God is far from great. That ’and is great which knows the Lord, whose songs are guided by his word; where justice rules ’twixt man and man. Where love controls in art and plan; where breathing in his native air, each soul finds joy in praise and pray er — Thus may our country, good and great, Be God’s delight — man’s oest estate.
