He said “Jesus said that before the end, race will be fighting race, evil will intensify and there will be immorality.’» An estimated 1,650 “inquirers” came forward after the sermon. Shelton, Social Security Repres entative for Harnett County ask ed today. Do you keep good rec ords of the time and wages of these workers? You should keep these records to establish the amount of social security taxes you owe. Most farm ers keep a record of the amount of wages paid each employee, but this is not a complete job of rec ordkeeping. Go^d records include j (1) the amount of cash wages paid I these employees, (2) the time each actually worked, and (3) their soc- ! ial security numbers. The social security tax should1 be withheld from the employee’s j wages during the period he works i even though you do not know how i long he will stay with you. A farm j worker’s wages are subject to soc- i ial security tax if you pay him as i much as 3150 during the year or' if the worker is employed on 201 or more days during the year and j paid on a time basis - - by the ! hour, day, or week. If he works less than 20 days1 and is not paid as much as 3150 during the year, you should refund ! the tax withheld from his wages. I If he meets either of the two tests, | the social security taxes must be j paid. Under the law, the employer is j held responsible for both the em ployee and employer tax for social security purposes. It is apparent, that a record of the time worked' and the wages paid is necessary i in order to determine which em- ! ployees to report. The actual re-1 port form requires a social secur- | ity number for each employee. i Most fanners get the social se curity numbers of their full-time employees but sometimes fail to: get those of their part-time work- j ers. These part-time employees I present a problem because they often quit or the job is finished I before the farmer gets a record i of the numbers. A good system J used by many employers is to in- j sist on seeing the social security j card before paying the first week’s wages. This should be understood by the worker at the time he is hired. If the employee does not have a social security card or has lost his card, ask him to get an applica tion form for a social security number from the nearest poet of fice. After he has completed this card and mailed it to his local social security district office, he will receive, his card In about 10 days.
