McNamara Friday reported a night-time mili tary incident off North Viet Nam. But he said there had been no da mage to Ameriian ships or per sonnel. In Dunn Auto Accident •; " ' | C ir. A Jury in Harnett Superior Court today returned a verdict awarding Malcolm McLeod of Is lington, Route 2, $5,000 damages against R. Dennis Strickland, pro minent Dunn business man as the result o* an automobile collision. Strickland’s daughter Sylvia Ann, a college student, was driver of fn automobile that collided with pne driven by McLeod at the cor ner of W. Vance St. and N. Mils Avenue in Dunn on November, 19. 19M. The accident occurred near Miss Strickland’* home. , ^ < Evidence ehowed that the acci dent occurred as Miss Strickland fame out of W. Vance Street. She testified that she was driving in r. slow, prudent, manner but did not see the other car. Both sides claimed contributory negligence. McLeod was confined to a hos pital here for 21 days and at Duke Hospital tor two months, and ac cumulated medical bills In ex cess of $2,500. State Senator Robert B. Morgan and his law associate. Attorney Fd McCormick, offered as a wit ness Dr. Bin Erwin, a psychia trist at Duke Hospital. He testi fied McLeod suffered from truma tic neurosis, brought about by the accident and also by his personality and a personal emotional exper ience suffered prior to the acci dent. Dr. Marvin B. Boole of Dunn also testified for McLeod. The defense attorneys, D. K. Stewart of Dunn and Teague, Johnson and Patterson of Ral eigh, contended McLeod’s condi tion is more mental than physical and has been tot a long time prior to the wreck McLeod had sought $100,000 da mages. Space Officials Are Jubilant Over Success CAPE KENNEDY (UPI) — The world’s mightiest known rocket, the U. S. Saturn - 1, leaped Into spate today and apparently or bited a 19 ton satellite in a major step toward conquest of the moon. The 190-foot tall Saturn - 1 thundered from its launching pad at 11:23 a.m. EST (12:23 p.m EDT) and 10 minutes later appeared to have scored its seventh success in as many launchings. A jubilant space agency spokes man said, “With a perfect per formance like this, we do have an orbit. But I will confirm It for you shortly.” The Saturn - 1 was Inspected personally by President Johnson three days ago. Its fiery departure was witnes sed-today by nine of the twenty nine IT. 8. astronauts who are trained to ride even more power ful models of Saturn on two week voyages in earth orbit, and ulti mately, to the moon. Perched on the super rocket’s nose 12 dories above its massive cluster of eight engines was a test model of the Apollo space ship that scientists hope to use to launch the first three asronauts to the moon before the end of this.-decade. PALMA NOVA, Italy (UPI) — 'Mrs Tosca Pecorari. 15, gave birth to an 8% -pound boy Friday. Doc tors said mother and baby were doing fine. Critcher To Fill Christian Pulpit The Rev D. B. Critcher, pop ular local Methodist minister, will till the pulpit at Hood Memorial Christian Church Sunday morning, it was announced today by Clar ence Lee Tart, Sr., ehairman of the church board. This will be the Rev. Critcher’s second appearance at the local church recently. “The people of our church en joyed him so much we wanted him to come hack,” declared Mr. Tart. New $150,000 Motel Being Erected Here Construction has been started , here on a new 52-unlt motel unit to cost in excess ot $150,000. When completed, It will also include a modem restaurant and swimming j pool. It is being erected by B. & S. Enterprises, Inc., a new corpora tion formed here by Elijah Bare foot and his son-in-law, O. B. (Bobby) Strickland. Both are well known business men. Mr. Bare foot has operated Ideal Tourist Court here since 1941 To be known as All-American Mo'els, Inc., the new racility “will be as modern as anything mi the road anywhere.” declared Mr. Barefoot today. The restaurant will be erect ed by Mr. Bass’ brother-in-law, Hugh Willie Tart, another well known motel operator here. Cost of the restaurant is not included in the $150,000 and it will be operated in connection with the motel but as a seperate business by Mr. Tart. R. Mr. Barefoot said today that Turling ton and his associates visited the best motels throughout the coun try to get ideas and to incorporate them into the All-Americart, ... Winn - Dixie Sales Show Another Gain Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc., oper ating 631 supermarkets through out the South reported a 4.46 percent sales increase during the eight-week period ended Aug. 22. Volume amounted to $133,360,684 compared with $127,57S, 448 for the corresponding period last year, an increase of $5,687,246. For the four-week period ended Aug. 22, sales were $66,003,062 compared, with $64,066,606 last year, an in crease of $2,536,476 or 3.96 percent. GOLD WATER BOOSTER — Sen. At Dunn High School Council Approves New Triffic Plan Dunn’s city council Thursday night voted to remove the contro versial island of sandbajgs and oil drums used during the past two weeks to channel traffic and avoid congestion In front of Dunn High School. Instead, the council decided, removable barricades will be used in front of the schools each morn ing prior to the opening of schools and each afternoon at the close of schools. The council also voted to pro hibit any parking whatever on the west side of Orange Ave. from the D & S Kailroad to Harnett Street between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Parking will still be permitted on the east side of Orange Avenue except on the block beside Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital. (Jo Jo) Williams of Dunn to fill a vacancy cn the county board of elections, adopted s strong resolution en dorsing and praising the Demo cratic ticket from top to bottom In the Nov. 3 election, and dis cussed plans for an intensive cam paign to roll up the biggest Dem cretie majority ever In Harnett, Mr. Williams well - known, businessman, longtime leader In the Democratic Party and at pres ent Registrar In Averasboro Pre cinct No. 2, was endorsed to fill the vacancy created when Earl Jones of Dunn was appointed as county tax collector. Dougald McRae, for yeans a Democratic Party wheeihorse in Harnett and in the State as well, is chairman of the elections board. Harvey Raynor is the Republican member. Dr. Woodall had r.ot sought the post, however, and GEORGE (Jo Jo) WILLIAMS j i the nomination was withdrawn and Williams was unanimously en dorsed by acclaimation. “I deeply appreciate this honor and the confidence shown in me,” said Mr. Williams, “ and if the county board accepts my endorse ment and appoints me, I Will ser ve to the very best of my ability and in the manner which I hope will reflect credit on the Demo cratic Party .*» The county board, which actual ly makes the appolntmeh, is expected to do so as a matter of routine.; Chairman Neill MeK.
