Interview With "Broadside's" Naval Officer Edward Andrews, the foppish, self-pampering naval command er in ABC-TV’s "Broadside”, joined the Army early in 1941, served in the artillery, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain at the end of World War n. “I was lucky,” says Andrews. “While other actors were at home slaving away in military musicals, I was out there grum bling ‘this is the army’ with no small degree of authority. Most of them, says Andrews, reached a point where they practically had to beg for combat duty. “Those shows served a won derful purpose and they were great morale boosters,” says Andrews. “Actually, some of the fellows in them came out more exhausted and shaky than the G.I.’s. There are other kinds of battles, you know.” How does Andrews feel about playing a naval commander? “Just fine. But remember, I’m not really playing an American military officer. I’m playing a jerk. “If I thought anyone took this character seriously, I think I’d join the Army again.” DRAMA OF YOUTH GANGS Youth gang activities on the streets of New York are reveal sd in “Memo from Purgatory” >n “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour” Monday, Dec, 21.
