Senior Citizens Capacity Crowd Enjoys Steele Creek’s Second Annual Luncheon -. By James Heeler J Post Feature Writer A near capacity crowd was present last Saturday at Steele Creek A.M.ErZIon Church for the Second Annual Service and Luncheon for the Sterling Community Senior Citizens, their families and friends. The festive affair began with an inspirational worship service in the church sanct uary with Mrs. Lillie B Dial, organizer and committee chairperson, presiding Other faithful committee members who worked to make the occasion a tremendous success were: Mr and Mrs. Charles Price, Mrs. Laura Reid, Mrs. Meleary White and Mr. and Mrs. James R Fraz ier. The gathering was wel comed by Rev J L Bennett, pastor of the church located at the city limit of Charlotte's South side, and Mr. Ulysses Phifer. • Mrs. Alridge Ross delivered a response to the welcome on behalf of the Senior Citizens of Sterling Community. In her remarks Mrs. Ross told the group that "Senior Citizens no longer sit at home and wait for the Lord to call them but rather they are busy doing things and going places." Registration For Summer School Set Registration for the Char lotte-Mecklenburg School's 1975 regular secondary sum mer schools will be Monday, June 16, at Garinger High School for students who have not registered. Late registration will be on Tuesday, June 17. Late regis tration is necessary because all student report cards will be mailed on Friday, June-13, and many students may not receive grades until too late to register on June 16. No registration will be al lowed after June 17 because students will not be able to complete enough hours to get credit for a course. All fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. Zion Church, was the featured speaker for the occasion He told the group “that we have all kinds of opportunities now if we will just reach out and challenge them.” He added, "the time has come for us to stop begging because our old er citizens have fought the battle that entitles us to equal rights that we can now enjoy." Beautiful music for the Se cond Annual Service was fur nished by' Miss Linda Hoover, organist, Mr. Clyde Potts, Mrs. Christine Luster, and Mrs. Josephine Crowder of McClintock Presbyterian Church. 0. J. Anderson, former teacher of Sterling High School, presented greetings to the Senior Citizens on behalf of and from U. S. President Gerald Ford, Governor James Holhouser, Congressman Jim Martin, and Mr. William Beatty, now of Washington, D. C.. who was formerly of the Sterling Community and is very much interested in the activities and welfare of the Senior Citizens. The formal service was fol lowed by a delicious luncheon in the church Fellowship Hall with its beautiful floral arrangements setting a plea sant mood and atmosphere The lunch was highlighted by the surprise presentation of numerous door prizes to the guests by Mrs. Reid. Mrs. White, and Mrs. Frazier Each Senior Citizen received some type of useful prize. Some of the guests attending the affair were: Dr. Thomas A. Jenkins. pastor emeritus of Statesville Avenue Presbyterian Church. Rev. Paul Davis. Mr. and Mrs. El Price and Senior Citizens from neighboring commun ities "It was an occasion to be remembered." said organizer Mrs Dial, "and will be re peated annuallv on the first Saturday in June " Arthur Uemment Joins Building Project Staff A Durham native, Arthur John Clement, has been ap pointed Assistant to the Pro ject Manager of the $46 5 mil lion Ochsner Medical Center expansion and remodeling project in New Orleans. Clement, a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Clement of 206 Pekoe Street, is associated with Heering and Heering Company, an Atlanta-based architectural and construction management firm. Heering and Heering is one of the south's major archi tectural and construction firms. In addition to the Ochs ner project, the firm designed the Atlanta Stadium, Cin cinnatPs_Riverfront Stadium and the new Rich Stadium in Buffalo. New York The massive Ochsner Medi cal Center project, which in cludes construction of eight major elements and renova tion of about half of the exist • ing structure, has a target completion date of late 1977. Clement is a 1971 graduate of the North Carolina State University School of Design and received his masters de gree in architecture from Massachusetts Institute of Technology While a student at NCSU, Clement was a su mer employee of John D. Latimer and Associates of _ Durham.
