tiouxird Petty Former JCSU Football Star Trains Middie Aviators Commander Howard C Petty is enthusiastic about his duty as an instructor at Anna . polis and the part he played -this past summer aboard ships of the U S. Sixth Fleet, helping to coordinate the 197-1 Mediterranean Training of Midshipmen At sea with the Academy men and other midshipmen from NROTC units across the nation. CDR Petty held the billet of Midshipman Liaison Officer. He visited various ships by way of helicopter or highline "carrying the Academy word," and overseeing thi Annapolis midshipmen ai they went through their pace: with the operating forces. An aviator who won hi' wings in 1957, Commandei . Petty enjoyed his ship-to-shif visits, “This is one of the wayi left for me to get back into the air," he said. PETTY ...Contemplates return to flying status louowing year His first duty with naval air was flying EC 121s (military version of the fdur-engine Connie) with an airborne early warning squa dron in the North Atlantic. In quick succession, he saw further aviation service at the Naval Air Technical Training Unit, Olathe. Kans.; as flight deck officer aboard the carrier Oriskany; and as assistant air frames officer on the staff of Commander Fleet Air Western Pacific in Japan. Commander Petty then ser ved with a transport squa dron-VR 21-at Barbers Point in Hawaii and. while with that unit, he was officer in charge of a seven-plane detachment operating out of the Naval Air Station Alameda near San Francisco. Calif. The commander has strong feelings about the Navy and people-in their relationships with each other. The Navy, he said, presents “new and chal lenging assignments, educa tion and travel. It's a good life.” An aviator to the core, Commander Petty looks for ward to returning to flying ; status. “I’ll fly anything, even a kite, as long as I'm on it." YWCA Schedules Kanip-A-Long Kamp-A Long, for girls 7-12, is ready to go at the Park Road YWCA, beginning June 16. The two-week sessions, Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 4:30 p.m., include swim ming, outdoor cooking, sports and special events. Fee per session is $31. North Carolina A&T Signs All-American Cage Star Greensboro-North Carolina A&T State University, cham pions of the Mid-Eastern Ath letic Conference, has announ . ced the signing of High School All-American, L.J. Pipklin to a basketball grant in aid. The 6-9 Pipkin averaged 19 _ points, 17 rebounds, five assists, and an amazing 13 blocked shots per game for Scotland (N.C.) High School this past season. “We are certainly proud to have a player of the caliber of L.J. to attend North Carolina A&T,” beamed A&T head Coach Warren Reynolds. “His style reminds me a lot of Bob McAdoo. He likes to move around and he has a deadly outside shot. He is the type of player who can shoot a team right out of a zone de Jones, McDaniel To Defend Title Monday A big World Tag Team Title Championship match between the reigning champions Paul Jones and Wahoo McDaniel against Ole and Gene Ander son will head the slate at Mid-Atlantic Championship wrestling at Charlotte’s Park Center Monday night at 8:15 p.m. ................. fense." Besides gaining High School A-A Honors, Pipkin was named Player of the Year in his area and was named to the All-State team. Earlier the Aggies announc ed the signing of rugged 6-7 Steve Cassel to a basketball grant. Cassel, also a highly sought-after player will play in the coveted East-West All Star game at the Greensboro Coliseum in July. Derision Coming July / MEAC Undecided On Basketball Tourney Site uurnam, -- 1 he Mid Lastern Athletic Conference 'MKACi Delegate Assembly held its annual three-day spring meet ing in Columbia. South Caro lina May 29-31 but the body composed of Presidents. Chancellors. Athletic Dir ectors and Faculty Repre sentatives set July 1st as its deadline dale for announcing the site of its 1975-76 Basket ball Tournament. During the three-day meet ing. Jim Oshust, Managing Director of the Greensboro Coliseum, made the presenta tion to the body for the Greens . boro Coliseum to host the MKAC Tournament next year Howard, the Delegate Assem bly delayed its final decision until July 1st. The Baltimoe Civic Center, the site for the MEAC Tournament for the last two years, has made a proposal to the MEAC to con tinue to host the three-day extravaganza. Begin ning in the 1975-76 year, the four required sports from six to four Beginning in the 1975 76 year, the four required sports in the MEAC will be football, basketball, track and wrestling. The move was brought about to try to lick the economic pinch. Even though only four sports will be man A1 Holland _—“Player of Year" dated, several institutions will continue to field other teams in other sports. Maryland-Eastern Shore was striped to its 1973-74 visit ation and tournament cham pionships because numerous ineligible player violations. The Hawks tied Morgan State for the regular season basket ball title in '73-74 and also won the conference tournament title in Baltimore. Morgan State was voted to become the - visitation and tournament champions for the '73-74 year. A recommendation from the conference track coaches to declare Delaware State the 1974-75 track champion was denied by the body. The group voted to not declare a track champion for this season. Howard was declared the 1974-75 baseball champion based on its regular season record against MEAC oppon ents. The track champion ships and the baseball playoffs were scheduled for Delaware State May 3-4 but were cancel led because of inclement weather on the second day. The track coaches wanted to award the team championship based on times and distances ran in the trials. Women sports and Title IX were discussed but no final decision was reached because league officials wanted to wait until the President’s position was made known. However, companion travel for some women sports were discussed. The body voted to send its football champion to the Divi sion II playoffs if selected but will continue to send a repre sentative to the Pelican Bow0 A recommendation by the football coaches association to increase the travel party for football players from 42 to 45 players was rejected An a mended motion to increase the squad to 44 was also denied The conference passed sev eral resolutions honoring its athletes or products of MEAC institutions for their achieve ments. A1 Attles, head coach of the Golden State Warriors and a graduate and former basketball player at A&T, was cited for leading his team to the NBA title. Special recognition was made of the fact 18 MEAC football players were either drafted or signed as free agents with' professional foot ball teams Three MEAC bas ketball players including Marvin Webster of Morgan State drafted by the Atlanta %Hawks. were cited on their recent achievement. .. Howard Kison Dominates All-MEAC Baseball Squad Durham-Howard Uni ver sify dominated the I'JTj .MI NI KAC baseball team announ ced Tuesday from the Com missioner's office here Howard, which finished the season with a 28-11 overall record and an 11-1 conference state, placed six men on the 12 man mythical squad which also included three players from Delaware State and one each from Morgan State, Maryland-Eastern Shore and A & T. Bison players were named to three infield positions while tying for the fourth spot Ho ward also gained two of the three outfield spots Michael Banks of Howard gained the job at first base while team mate Bert Herron and Kobert Harvey of Delaware State tied for the second base position. Slugger Calvin Smith of Ho ward and teammate Winford Copeland won the shortstop and third base slots respect ively. Morgan State's Eric Couch landed the catcher position. Outfielders named to the '75 mythical squad were Selvene Watts of Maryland-Eastern Shore and Kenneth Warren and Elwood Holland of Ho ward. A1 Holland of North Carolina A&T gained the left hand pit cher position while Tony Shaw ol Delaware State and John Chestnut! of Howard tied for the right handed pitcher post. Chuck Hinton of Howard was named "Coach of the Year" while A1 Holland of A&T w as chosen as the base ball" "player of the year." Mel Groomes of A&T finished as runner up in the Coach of the Year balloting while El wood Holland of Howard placed second in the player of the year-poll. A&T and Delaware State each placed four men on the second team. Morgan State gained two slots and Mary land-Eastern Shore one on the second unit.
