Jackson Sixty-eight former athletes, managers, and trainers who played or served under Coach Edward L. Jackson during his 9-year tenure at Johnson C. Smith University-from 1936 to 1945-awarded him a plaque containing their names during halftime activities at Johnson C. Smith University's Home coming game an<t feted him with a "Soul Smorgasbord Dinner” in Rooms B 4 C of the Student Union Building follow ing the game. Coach Jackson, 69, “left Johnson C. Smith University . j 30 years ago,” according to William "Bill” Davis, class of '45, first Student Government President at JCSU, and organ izer of the "TRIBUTE TO COACH 4ACKSON" affair. Davis added, "During Coach Jackson's stay at Smith the team won several CIAA Championships and played in the i*H4 Orange Bowl.” According to Davis, Coach Jackson's leadership produc ed All-American Wide Receiv er Jack Brayboy, presently a Vice-President at JCSU, and other standouts such as JCSU Athlete Director and Head Coach Eddie McGirt, and JCSU Asst.-Backfield Football coach and Head Track Coach Kenneth Powell. . Organizer Davis, an Attor ney with the executive Branch of the U.S. Government in Philidelphia, said the effort to have a ‘‘Tribute to Coach Jackson” was begun last March,— - Coach Jackson and all the former athletes had a gala time and most of them “hadn’t seen each other in 30 years,” concluded Davis, saying, “they (the athletes) came from all over the U.S. and one, Milton Branch, Chief Prosecu tor for the Attorney General, came from the Virgin Islands to attend the affair and Home coming.” W. Charlotte’s 1962 Class To Meet Sunday The Class of 1962 of West Charlotte High School will meet at the Greenville Neigh borhood Center Sunday Nov ember 16, at 5:30p.m., accord ing to class treasurer John Love. Among the topics of discus sion for the meeting will be a social event the class is plan ning for the weekend of Nov ember 28-29. On Friday the 28th, there will be a cocktail party from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Downtowner Motor Inn on McDowell St. On the 29th, there will be a testimonial dinner at the motel from 6 p.m. until. The dinner will be held in honor of Jack Martin, a former football coach at West Charlotte.__ Invitations for the weekend event are available from A. D. Neals Barber Shop, Taylor Barber Shop, Charles Barber Shop, the Excelsior Club and the Smart Shop for Men. The invitations are being sold for the entire event and are $12. Delaware to meet Delaware State (2-2-0, 5-3-0) at 130. In non-conference action Morgan State (1-3-1, 3-4-1) will be at home against Central State of Ohio and Maryland Eastern Shore (0-5-0, 0-7-0) meets Bowie State Saturday night at 8 o'clock in Salisbury, Maryland. S C. State (4-1-0, 6-1-1) handed Maryland-Eastern. Shore its seventh straight shutout Saturday night in Wilmington, Delaware, 28-0 in fhe only conference game Saturday. MEAC teams did not fare too well against non-confer ence teams last weekend, Delaware State hung on to a 14-6 victory over Shaw Univer sity in Raleigh, but Johnson C. Smith built up a 22-0 lead and then held off a fourth period rally by TSofth Carolina Cen tral for a 22-14 decision. Southern upped its record to 8-1 for the year by blanking Howard, 20-0 in Washington. D. C. Grambling led 21-0 after the first quarter and went on to defeat N. C. A&T, 48-16. Morgan State nipped Virginia Union 24-21 Sunday afternoon in Mt. Vernon, N.Y.in the Black College Classic. I- - Delaware Male scoring me first and fourth periods to g) spoil the homecoming for Shaw Andre Brown passed six-yards to John Chisholm in the initial quarter but Shaw narrowed the margin to 7-6_at intermission.- The Hornets scored the winning touchdown midway the final 15 minutes on a 37-yard run by Dave Griffin. The game was called off by the officials with 3:37 showing on the clock after a free-for-all fight broke out between the two teams. Sophomore quarterback Doug Williams completed 10 of 19 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns.
