Phillip Nelson Equips His Members To Be “Soul Winners” By Sidney Moore Jr. Post Staff Writer ‘ We've equipped the mem " bers of our church to be ‘soul —wtnners’,'' aatd -the—Rev Phillip Nelson, pastor of the newly formed Faith C.M.E Church. Since coming to Charlotte in May, Nelson and eight ori ginal members of his church have built them congregation to its present 80 member status. As an example of how in tense his members work for the church. Nelson said, ‘‘We’ve got 12 year old child ren leading people to Christ.” Nelson, a native of Detroit, Michigan, was assigned to Charlotte by presiding CM E Bishop Henry C Bunton of Washington, D. C Bunton oversees the work of his church in this district Having been sent to Char I totle. iSelson s goal is to “be a part of a movement that re sults in an opportunity for every person in Charlotte to receive the message of Christ " He said he wants his goal to be achieved by sharing the Christian experience, not by forcing people to listen to what he has to say HeJbasesJiis goal on a per sonal vision instilled in him from two passages of scrip ture. Nelson cites Matthew 28:18-2u as what he wants to share with others and Act 1 8 as "where you go to get the power" you w-ant to share The 28 year old pastor has a B A. degree from Wayne State University and an M. Div. degree from Garrett Semi nary at Northwestern Univer sity. Both schools are in Detroit. Nelson pastered in Indiana for three years before going to California as a traveling re-— presentative of the Campus Crusade for Christ He attend ed The International Congress on Evangelization in Switzer land in July 1971.
