Belk's Fashion Show Fashion Genius Jim Daugherty Impresses Local Audience By Abigail L Flanders Post Staff Writer You walk into a dressing _ rooni where his masterpieces stand tail and elegant upon a steel rack. His face is stern and serious as he examines each garment and properly fits it with the nervously awaiting model to which it is to be ornamented. Immediate ly you think it's going to be another “Yes,” “No", staunch, stiff interview with another snub nose, fashion de signer....But after things quiet down backstage...after each Cinderella has found her magical matching garment, you meet a smiling, lovable, amazing artist....James -Daugherty_ Top noted is not exactly the word for Daugherty’s w.ork. He comes better under the heading of sensational both as a person and as an artist. He is a veritable genius. Shy, and boyish, he talks about each fashion as if each were his own personal mistress, almost too delightful an experience to reveal, yet too explosively and amazingly beautiful to con ceal. Perhaps this is because James Daugherty, even as a young boy living in Los Angeles had a very special past time. He watched wo men...Not the ones that every one stares at, the ones that are labeled “beautiful” at the time of birth, but the average woman to whom no one really takes any second glance. Fortunately, Daugherty did take a first, second and per haps even a third glance, picturing in his eye all the wonderful things that could happen to her appearance just with a different type of dress, or maybe some accessories. Daugherty believed in his own mind that this woman could be looked at with just as much admiration as the women who -’ supposedly" walk in beauty like the night.” “My only in spirauon lor designing domes is making every woman beautiful. That's why I design simple styles....things that every woman may look attractive in” Daugherty says. Daugherty, who incidentally prefers to be called Jimmy, found it very difficult getting started. “I would phone pers pective buyers and they’d tell me to come on over, but as soon as they saw that I was Black, they would turn me away without even looking at my port folio,” Jimmy recalls. Later on-he was hired as assistants to designers, the last designer being Jerry Sil verman, who does many of the clothes for the soap operas, which is also one of Daugherty!» accomplish ments as well. He worked for Jerry Silverman for seven years, during which time he won the Tommy Award - the Outstanding Designer Award that is given to the fashion designer who has most affec tively used fabrics during the course of the year. Finally, Jimmy decided to Sprout his own wings ...and boy did he fly! James Daugherty may de scribe his fashions as simple, but fashion designers all over the world, fashion conscious women and the gleams in the eyes of all those awe-struck people who came out to Belk’s Thursday night gazing, staring, admiring and drool ing over each magnificent creation will agree that there is nothing simple about a Daugherty fashion.
