Evening Child Care Available Tl> Students Beginning with the Winter Quarter, Central Piedmont Community College will offer evening care for preschool children ages 2 - 5 who are children of CPCC night stu dents. This is another way to help citizens upgrade their quality of life by making it possible for them to attend the College. Registration for the Winter Quarter begins Mon day, November 17 The hours of child care will be 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Enroll ment is on a quarterly basis, and the CPCC student must present his or her registration card at the time of enrollment of the child. Enrollment must be in advance of class atten dance to reserve a space for the child. The cost per child per even ing is $2.60, and all fees are payable four weeks in ad vance in the CPCC business office. This service is being offered within CPCC’s present licensing framework It is possible that purchase of care sponsorship for marginal in come parents can be arranged through Social Services. Financial commitments make it necessary for the College to have at least thirty children rolled each quarter in order to offer this service. Each child will be required to have a health certificate. To enroll your child, call Mrs. Lois Petrowski, Director of CPCC’s Child Care Training Center, at 373-6758 between the hours of 8 a m. and 5 p.m. CPCC To Offer Community, School Course Central Piedmont Community College in recogn ition of the Charlotte-Meck lenburg School’s “Year of the .Community” will offer a spe cial course designed to, ex plore the interaction between '^TfeWity they . The course, entitled ‘ ‘Teacher-Citizen-Commun ity,” is open to all CMS tea chers for certificate renewal credit as well as community citizens. Instructor will be Marion H. (Moe) Ward, executive direc tor of Dimensions for Char lotte-Mecklenburg. He will be joined by various business, civic, government and politi cal leaders as the course pro gresses. The course will meet 10 times-each Thursday from 7:30-9:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the Education Cen ter, 701 E. Second Street--bet ween November 13 and Feb ruary 5. Registration will be at the first meeting on November 13. The fee is $3. Participants will also need their social security numbers to register. The course will be built around basic areas of school community interest including the school, city and county government, economy and the community, physical planning and the environment, higher and continuing education, government services, people services to people, and peo ple’s relationS to each other. For more information, call Otto Lockee, vice president for continuing education at CPCC, telephone 373-6717 56 Grants To Local Groups The Charlotte Arts and Science Council was granted $2,000 to help produce a down town art* festival The Char lotte Regional Ballet will re ceive $1,250 for a tribute to George Balachine. The Greater Charlotte Dance Guild was granted $1,550 for its proposed formation of local dance theatres and $1,000 was given to the Summer Arts InaUtue, Inc. for a summer daff’e program. Four Charlotte groups will benefit from 56 grants award ed by the N. C. Arts Council this week. The council made grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 in support of art-orient ed projects Applications totaling $360,000 were received from 132 arts organizations over the state. A total of $106,400 in grants were approved Rev. Mrs. Faye Wallace Named “Miss China Grove, 1975” The eighth annual "Mrs. China Grove” Coronation sponsored by the Mixed Choir of The church, took place' re cently in the beautiful new sanctuary of the China Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, which held its opening day celebra tion at 3:00 P.M. on Sunday, July 6, 1975. The Rev. Maxie L. Houston is the Minister. —Thp church will he formally dedicated in February 19767"— The Coronation, held Octo ber 26, at 6:30 P.M. was pre sided over by Mrs. Thomasina Staten. The program included a short ^devotion, words of welcome by Mrs,. Sadie Patten, Vice President of Mixed Choir, vocal music by Mr. James Wilson accofn pained by Miss Joyce Zim merman, procession, reports,, crowning and presentations. The procession was fed by Mrs. Yvonziner Cuthbertson," “Mrs. China Grove for 1974.” She was escorted by her hus band, Thomas. The crown bearer - little Miss Natarsha Antoinette Roberts was es corted by Master Keyela Kenyatta Hunt. This year's contest again featured 20 contestants - each accompained by an escort. Although enthusiasm has always been keen for this affair, this year's contest showed peak enthusiasm be cause the members were al ready worshipping in the new edifice. The sanctuary was almost filled to capacity to witness f this concerted ettort. The proceeds will go towards the church's building fund. Work ing together, sacrificing, help of friends and inspirational pastoral leadership are all contributing factors to the success of this venture which netted $9,712.59 in seven short weeks. Mrs. Sadie Connor, who ' was First Runner-up in last years event, was also First Runner-up this year with a sum of $1,184.63. Mrs. Arcelia Price, Second Runner-up re ported $1,000. She likewise _was second runner-up last ~ year. , - ' • Mrs. Wallace was crowned by the out-going Queen, Mrs. Cuthbertson. She will reign for one year. A trophy was pre sented by the Rev. Wardell Henderson. Pastor of Weeping Willow A.M.E. Zion Church - who acted in the absence of Rev. Lonnie C. Clark, Pre siding Elder of the Charlotte District of the Western North Carolina Conference of the A.M.E. Zion Church. Special prizes were then presented to the New Queen, and 1st and 2nd runners-up by the pastor. All contestants received certi ficates of appreciation from Mrs. Staten. The reception, which followed the ceremony, was held in the Fellowship Hall, and was arranged by Mrs. Lillian Harris and her committee. The chief host and hostess respectively were Mr Anthony Parker and Mrs. Mary Ann Harris. Among many special guests who were grateful and honor ed were Edward O. Tracy from Salisbury, North Caro lina and President of the Western North Carolina Con _fprpppp Board^of Ushers. Public Meeting Planned For 1-77 Connector A- fcublrc information-mpp« ing On a proposed connector between 1-77 South and U. S. 74 TSast, a portion of tjie Char lotte Outer Loop, will be held Thursday, November 13, at 7:30 P.M. at Quail Hollow Junior High School. The purpose of the meeting is to inform Mecklenburg County residents and other interested citizens of alter native corridor locations for the connector. The alternative locations were developed by Wilbur Smith and Associates, a con sulting firm which will pre pare a combined route loca tion report and Environment al Impact Statement on the project.
