The Golden Bulls are one of "the hottest football teams in bl^£k college football, with many invaluable assets. Eddie McGirt, their personable atheltic direc tor and head coach, has just added the NAIA District 26 "Coach Of The Year" trophy to his over-crowded trophy chest and two of his top performers are standing out like Stone Mountain in this week's CIAA statistics. Ernest Williams, who was named to the All-District Team, is leading the conference in individual rushing and quarterback James Wideman is third in individual passing and total offense. Both Williams and Wideman are strong candidates for All-CIAA laurels. Seems that one never get through congratula ting Clarence "Bighouse" Gaines for his great work in basketball. The ole taskmaster is beginning his 30th season at Winston-Salem State Friday night in Winston-Salem when the Rams hosts High Point College. "Bighouse" will be looking to add another victory to the 553 he has collected through the years. He is the nation's winningest active basketball coach. Gaines has been on the wrong end of the scoring on only 223 occasions. Bet you didn't know that Charlotte native Shellie Jackson has been named Women's Ath letic Director at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh? A graduate of Johnson C. Smith, Miss Jacksonwill direct the Falconettes in four sports, volleyball, basketball, Softball and track. Wonder what you have to do to gain national recognition? Johnson C. Smith finished the football season wun sever! Straight viclcuies to end up in a tie for second place in the CIAA, with one of the two best records in the conference. However, McGirt's red-hot Herd was placed a lowly 15th among the nation's top 20 black college football teams by Mutual Black Net work's panel of experts. In the meantime, Fayetteville State, an outfit the Bulls whipped easily week before last, was voted ninth, with N. C. A&T 12th, N. C. Central 13th and S. C. State in third place. Dapper Charley Dannelly, the principal at Quail Hollow Elementary School who is chair man of the tournament committee, predicts the Sixth Charlotte Tip-Off Basketball Tournament at the Charlotte Park Center next weekend will "be the best ever." We believe him. Anytime S. C. State, Barber Scotia, St. Augustine's and J. C. Smith lineup in the same meet, exciting action is guaranteed. Senior Aiex Barron and Marvin Fields have been chosen to serve as co-captains of the South Carolina Bulldogs. Tim Autry's star-studded squad will open the new season Friday night. Here is one for you. Winston-Salem State, with one of its worse records in memory, had the CIAA's most porous defenses. The Rams won the dubious honor of allowing the most points scored (330) for the campaign. Livingstone gave up the fewest points (78) and Virginia Union won the honors for the most points scored (268). Shaw spoiled our otherwise pertect record last week with its 7-7 deadlock with Livinstone. Nevertheless, we finished the football season with a lofty 64 right and only 22 wrong in our prediction of the football winners each week. Eddie McGirt isn't the only CHAMP around town.
