Steele Creek School To Host Residence Poet North Carolina poet Jean Rodenbough will be poet-in residence at Steele Creek Ele mentary School Feb 16-20. She will spend four days work ing directly with students in language arts classes. Ms. Rodenbough is one of many poets who will'Vork with students during the school year through the Community and Schools Share Talents: 1975-76" program, developed jointly by the Curr iculum and Staff Development Department and the local citi zens Creative Arts Committee. r unds for the program are National Endownment for the Arts monies channeled through the Division of Cul tural Arts, State Department of Public Instruction. The poetry-in-the-schools Droiect is designed to stimu late creativity in students through the use of language. Exercises-directed at in % creasing awareness of the five senses and at increasing the ability to think logically and talk expressively-culminate in the writing of poems. Ms. Rodenbough is a resi dent of Madison where she serves as a member of the town’s board of aldermen. Rockingham County coordin ator for the N.C. Council on the Status of Women, she was formerly an instructor at Rockingham Community College and Oak Ridge Academy. The mother of four, she has been published widely in North Carolina and has won several awards and prizes for her writing. ■ B ** 1 aservauon i n 2 Schools Topic of PTA Meeting The neighborhoods of Myers Park and Eastover still retain much of their original beauty and charm, but there are those who contend that pre ssures are at work which coulc destroy them; Dr. Dan L. Morrill, profes sor of history at the University ofwsiorth Carolina at Charlotte, wni present a special audio visual program which will examine these problems and sugggest some ways to attack them at Monday evening's February 16 meeting of the Eastover PTA. The meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Eastover School auditorium, 500 Cherokee Rd The public is invited. Morrill, co-president of the Eastover PTA, has made a special study of pressures on the Myers Park and Eastover neighborhoods. Young, MacWhitery Capture S.C. State Alumni Prizes Art Young of Cherryville, N. C. and Richard MacWhitery of Monmouth Beach, N.J. have been named the winners oi the Charlotte Chapter of the South Carolina State College Alumni Association's annual raffle. The first prize winner. Young is the recipient of a three-day stay at the Howard Johnson High Rise Motel in Greensboro next weekend during the Mid-Eastern Ath letic Conference Basketball Tournament at the Greens boro Coliseum, Second prize winner MacWhitery will re ceive a cash payment of $50. Held in the interest of the Chapter's annual Scholarship Drive, the drawing took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William M. Blakeney, with Gerald Johnson, the great grandson of Mr. and Mrs. James Edmunds drawing the winning tickets stubs. “The money raised during Belmont Center Library To Hear Manny Clark WGIV disc jockey, Manny Clark, will discuss radio for a 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb ruary 25 program at the Belmont Center library, 700 Parkwood Avenue. Also participating in the program will be Michael Porter and various musicians from the Fungus Blues Band and from Funk House. the drive is to be given to the scholarship fund of the college to help some deserving young man or'woman in financial need," said Mr. Blackeney. Preceeds from this event will go to the Mecklenburg 4-fl Club Fund and the N.C. 4-H Development Fund for the support of the youth development program of 4-H, the world's largest youth organization. The hours of the sale are 9 a.m.-9:30 p.m. each day. Sale items will include hou sehold furnishings, toys, cloth ing, crafts, plants, and much more.
