Or. Kentiori Says High Blood Pressure Is Major Disease Suffered By Blacks By James Peeler Post Staff Writer The Charlotte Medical, Dental and Pharmacuetical Society held the first of a series of seminars, to be conducted in their campaign to make Charlotte's black community aware of the dangers of HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE, last Sunday beginning at 2 at the Mother House of Prayer on Beatties Ford Road. According to Dr. Tolly A. Kennon, "over 120 persons were screened (had their blood pressure checked) — and approximately 85 per cent of those screened were women.” He lamented this statistic be cause, as he says, “black men are the most afflicted by the disease of Hypertension.” High Blood Pres sure is the major disease suffered by this country’s Black population as well as the most important factor in their shorter life expectancy. Df-. Kennon says, “A National Health Survey has disclosed that 21.1 percent of urban blacks have hypertension, compared with 13.5 per cent of urban whites.” He added, “Deaths from Hypertension are 4 times more prevalent in Black men than in white men.” The society’s Public Relation Committee members sav that Hiah Blood Pressure can be easily detec ted and in most cases can be adequ ately controlled. They recommend that the follow ing steps can be taken for control of high blood pressure: 1. Have your blood pressure check ed. 2. Follow medical advice about med icine, diet, and changes in health habits. 3. Keep taking your medicine whet her you feel well or not, but tell your physician and his staff how you feel. 4. Cooperate, you and the medical team must work together in order to get your high blood pressure under control. Dr. Raleigh Bynum and other ^ members of the Society expressed Sheir sincere appreciation for the ooperation they received from El der Claude Wilkinson and House of Prayer Nurses-headed by Mrs. Girl ie Sanders - in kicking-off their High Blood Pressure Seminars.
