The Rangers didn't get the hits last weekend, lashing out six in each contest. They, however, got good mileage out of their offense with nine stolen bases and a sparkling defense that came through with four timely double plays. Hoekins Down Hawks, 4-0 Behind Dixon Righthander Willie Dixon pitched a 4-hitter here Satur day afternoon to lead the Hoskins Giants to a 4-0 Triple County Semi-Pro Baseball League victory over the slum ping Charlotte Hawks. The victory extended the Hawks' losing to four straight, two in the league and as many in the NBC Tournament in Lenoir. The veteran Dixon had things pretty much his own way as the Giants staked him with a two run lead in the fifth and added a run in each the seventh and eighth innings to win going away. Richard Black's triple, cou pled with Jerry White's single ed the tallies in the sixth. A hit, stolen base and a sacrifice fly got the Giants another run in the seventh and a pair of singles and a hit batter wound up the scoring. The Hawks will travel to Lancaster, S.C. Saturday to meet the B.T. Express. Kerry Carouthers, who is 1-0 for the year, will get the mound as signment. Morris Field will host the Hawks at Harding High School's athletic field Sunday afternoon, if the Rangers lose in the NBC Tournament Thursday or Friday night. If the Rangers should win both nights, the Sunday's game will be postponed to a later date. Express at Trojans Kings Mountain at Tigers Alter exploding for three markers in the second to take an early lead, Morris Field watched WNC storm back with a pair of runs in the fourth and a single tally in the sixth to tie the count at 3 runs apiece, sending the contest into extra innings. WNC went ahead 4-3 with another run in the eighth and Morris Field was backed a gainst the walls in this double elimination tournament, with one last turn at bat. The Rangers, who lost to Lenoir Shur-Par, 9-3, in the first round the week before, gained new life when Tim Morris led off with a single to right field. Charley Houston moved Tim up to second with a sacrifice before Londell Mc Clary got on via a throwing error which also sent Morris to third. Pitcher Melvin Latta rushed Morris home with the tying marker when he singled up the middle, and Randy Falls knocked in the winning run with - another one-base blow up the middle. Latta, who is a member of the Charlotte Bummers, pitch ed the distance, giving up only three hits while fanning nine and walking six for his and the Rangers' first triumph in the tournament. Pitcher Foxie Davis, who plays regularly with the Char lotte Red Birds of the local Triple County League, threw a three-hitter at Kerners ville Sunday and the Rangers didn't experience any difficul ties in lashing the Raiders for their second straight triumph. Davis struck out six and walk ed four. Londell McClary singled to lead off the fourth, stole se cond and raced home with what proved to be the game's winning run when Alfred Thompson lashed a single to left field. The Rangers added the three insurance runs when Davis doubled to left field to score Harold Adams, Thomp son and Murphy Morris. Thomas said he would wait until "just before gametime" before naming his starting pitcher for Thursday night's game with Old Fort, which is slated to start at 6 o'clock. Old Fort has lost to Kernersville and later picked up wins over Salisbury Euart and the Char lotte Hawks. However, naming a starting pitcher is only one of Tho mas's problems. He's faced with the task of replacing Tim Morris, who sustained a brok en nose in Sunday's game, as well as with the fact that several of his top players are nursing wounds of varying degrees. Londell McClary, the team's hottest player at the moment, will likely start in the outfield along with Murphy Morris and Bill Davis. Harold Adams will catch, Charley Houston will play secondbase, with Randy Falls at shortstop and Alfred Thompson at thirdbase. Tho mas said that, if a left handed pitcher opens for Old Fort, he, likely will install Larry Wright at first base, replacing Bobby Reynolds who has been in a mysterious slump of late.
