Τ op African Officials Τ ο Address 7 9th Lot Care ν Bantist Convention > — High African officials are scheduled to address the 79th annual session of the Lot Carey Baptist Foreigh Mis sion Convention meeting in Richmond at the Fifth Street Baptist Church, 2800 Third Avenue. August 30-September 3. with the Rev. Roscoe D. Cooper Jr acting as host pastor. * Honorable George L'dalpho, Assistant Ambassador of Ni geria. and Regional Kamma of Liberia where the conven tion's chief foreign mission station is located, will bring reports of the work that is being done in their respective countries. Delegates from A merica. Africa and India a long with more than 2,000 messengers from the United States will make plans to extend the convention's objec tives that is being led by the Rev. C.R. Edwards ot Fay etteville, N.C., president. Mr. Edwards will be making his third annual address to the convention and his term will expire according to a tenure rule that has been adopted by the organization. υr. v>.u. àommerviue ol Washington, D.C., the conven tion's executive secretary, re ports that this year's receipts are the highest in the conven tion's history with more than one hundred and seventy churches reporting One Thou sand Dollars each making a total of better than a Half Million Dollars for the conven tion's objectives in Africa and India. Mr. Sommerville's an nual report to the assembly will include a recent visit to Africa where new buildings for the organization have been constructed. Opening here with a pre convention musical directed by Mrs. Juanita David, New York, a history of Lot Carey by a 500 voice choir will be presented with talent from local churches being heard. Mrs. David is associated with the City School System of New York and the music depart ment of Convent Baptist Church of that city which has contributed more than Five Thousand Dollars to Lot Ca rey. Bussey of Columbus, Ohio, and the Youth Department supervised by Mrs. Louise Slater of Phila delphia. Pa., will also be in session during the week at Fifth Street Baptist Church. Dr. C.H. Jordan, chairman of the organization's executive board, will preside over the group Tuesday afternoon at 3 in the assembly hall at Fifth Street. Mr. Jordan succeeds the late Dr. W.L. Ransome of this city who served in this capacity for more than 50 years. Assisting the host pas tor will be the Rev. Isaac James who is scheduled to preside over the Welcome Program. Mr. James is a member of the executive board and a local pastor, also an officer of the General Bap tist State Convention in Vir ginia. inuring uie ween, me Kev. M.G. Wood from Baltimore, Md. who recently conducted the convention's Christian Youth Seminar at Shaw Uni versity, Rpleigh, N.C., which was attended by several hun dred young people from se veral states, will report on their objectives. This is an annual project of the parent body that is sponsored by the Women's Department. The Rev. Noel C. Taylor, first elected black Mayor of Roanoke, Va., - pastor of the High Street Baptist Church and President of the Virginia Baptist State Convention, will speak to the messengers on Wednesday morning. Reports will also be made by the Rev. E D. Kent, secretary of the executive board, and Mrs. Jennie H. Hall, Washington D. ...uucbi speaner C., editor of the Herald, the convention's organ. Howard Parker, president of the Young People's Department, from Winston-Salem, N.C. will bring his annual address and will be assisted by~ several other young people from Ohio, N.C., the District of Columbia and other places. This year's theme, "Minis tering To The Least Of These," will be discussed by the Rev. Ben A. Beamer, Portsmouth, Va., the Rev. M.L. Dillingham, Wilmington, N.C., the Rev. John J. Misho las, Jr., Wheaton, Md.t the Rev. J R. Person, Farmville, N.C., and the Rev. Melvin Wilson, Clarksville, Pa. This year's Family of the Year is the Weddie L. Gabriel Family of Sherrill's Ford, N.C. who will be presented during the week in a special ceremony. The Missionary Department of the Mayfield church con sists of 4 Senior Groups, a Young Adult Group, and a Junior Department having 4 different groups. The President of the May field Missionary Department is Mrs. Amy Crosby with Mrs. Ellen Johnson serving as Pre sident of the Young Adults and Mrs. Hannah Crowe serving as Supervisor of the Juniors. Mrs. Margie Squash, pro gram Chairperson for the Se niors, was pleased that Rev. Andrew Cuthbertson, his choir and congregation from Plea sant Hill Baptist were special guests. Rev. STATESVILLE AVENUE The annual picnic of States ville Avenue United Presbyte rian Church will be held Sun day, August 29, at the lake Norman home of Mr. and Mrs. Romeo Alexander. Rev. Wilburn Sanders will conduct the regular 11 a.m. worship service preceding the picnic. FIRST BAPTIST "State Missions Day" will be observed at First Baptist Church, 1020 South Church Street, Sunday, August 29. Church officials are urging members to share liberally in the offering this Sunday be cause State Convention finan cial books will close as of August 31. Several church events are forthcoming. Following morning services on Sunday, August 29, hosts and hostesses, and the Adult Committee will meet.
