Vernard Johnson, a re nowned saxophonist, will be featured at Friendship Baptist Church, located at 3301 Beat- -ties Ford Road, on Monday, April 4 and Tuesday, April 5, in conjunction with the Youth Revival which will start on Sunday, April 3 AM last until Annual Youth Marching^ylFaith^i April 8. Mr. Johnson, a native of Kansas City, Kansas, has ap peared throughout America and with Billy Graham, Tom Skinner, Andre Crouch, The Edwin Hawkins Singers, Pro fessor James Cleveland, Shir ley Ceasar and before the National Baptist Convention USA. Presently, Johnson is study ing toward a Doctor’s degree in music at Southwestern Bap tist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas and will be the first black student ever to receive a Master of Church Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Southwes tern, the world’s largest semi nary. “To hear this young man is an experience one will never forget. He is an inspiration to old and young alike," Pastor Kerry said. The theme for the Revival, “Youth Marching By Faith," is to bring a spiritual awaken ing to the Church with strong emphasis upon the youth’s commitment to Christ and his church. ’The Rev. Eugene ' Weather of Dallas, Texas, will deliver his sermon April 4, - with ^ Revival pastor. Rev. Danny Henderson of Char lotte. The youth choirs of the Church will furnish music with the Children of the Sun of UNCC and the R.W. Johnson Spiritual Choir of Johnson C. Smith University as special guests. ^ends of Jesus, Mission Friends. Acteens, their Super visors, Counselors and Direc tors will lead the church in it’s Youth Revival along with the Attendance Builders who will be responsible for filling the pews each evening and the youth who will serve as Pew Captains with their parents working with them to assure full participation. B A^ST CONVENTION The-Progicssive Nattonal^ Baptist Congress of Christian Elducation will convene in Charlotte this year during the week of June 20th through June 24. ’The Convention has delegates from all over the United States, and is held in a different city each year. In 1976, the Progressive National Convention was held in West Palm Beach, Florida; and in 1978 it will convene in Los Angeles, California. More than 5,000 delegates, repre senting churches aU over A- merica will meet in Charlotte at this time. The newly elected President of the Convention is Dr. ’Tho mas Kilgore Jr., Pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Los Angeles, California. The new 1st Vice-President is Dr. Wil liam A. Former President was Dr. Nelson H. Smith, Pastor of the New Pilgrim Baptist Church of Birmingham, Alabama. Charlotte’s own Dr. H.S. Diggs, Pastor of the Mayfied Memorial Baptist Church, is the Recording Secretary of the Convention. Mayfield Memo rial Baptist Church will serve as the Host Church for the Convention this year. The Progressive National Baptist Congress of Christian Education has as its Presi dent, Dr. W.J. Hodge. First Vice-President of the Con gress is J.S. Hall, and 2nd Vice-President is Howard W. Creecy, Sr. Charlotte’s own Mrs. Elizabeth Kelly is the Secretary of the Congress and a member of the Mayfield Memorial Baptist Church. Elach year the convention has carried out the tradition of a pre-convention musical that takes place the first night of the sessions, officially opening the convention. ’The musical consists of singers from all churches in the host city com bining in a multitude of voices that prove each time to be u inspiring event. Charlotte, serving as host this yMr alan plans to present a musical thl« year that will be held at the Civic Center on the opening night of the convention, which will be Monday, June 20. Letters have been sent to aU area ministers, asking them to emphasize to their' various members the importance and Qie honor of participation in' this musical. A 1,000 voice choir is anticipated. Mrs. Rosena Nicholas has been appointed directress of the musical. Mrs. Nicholas is a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University and a Music Teacher at McKnitt Alexand er Junior High School in Hun tersville. The Minister of Mu sic at Ebenezer Baptist Chur ch, she is also an accomplish ed piano and organ teacher, A very competent and capable musician, Mrs. Nicholas was in charge of the same type musical event when the Con vention was held in Charlotte in 1966. Mrs. Nicholas stated that a variety of music will be per formed, including: Hymns, Anthems, Spirituals, and Gos pels. Rehearsals for the musi cal are now being held each Thursday evening at 8 p.m. at the Mayfield Memorial Bap tist Church in the church Sanctuary. Mayfield Memori al Baptist Church is located at 700 Sugar Creek Road West. Everyone who would like to parUcipate is invi^ to come to the rehearsals and join in the fellowship. During the 15th Annual Ses sion of the Progressive Na tional Baptist Convention, held in- Washington, D.€r,-a- 600-voice choir was featured at the musical and was consi- deiwl a Ueiiieiiduus success. The choir sang special ar rangements of hymns of faith and praise, anthems, black spirituals, instrumental mu sic, and-songs of brotherhood. ’The musical also featured several soloists. Heading the Music Commit tee of the Convention is Miss Violet M. Ankoum and Rev. Henry S. Moore. Persons of all faiths, not only Baptists, are cordially Invited to attend the rehear sals and sing in the Convention Musical. The Convention Headquar ters will be at the Radisson Plaza Hotel and the Classes and Sessions of the Congress of Christian Education will lake place at the Civic Center. NEW EMMANUEL The New Emmanuel Con gregation United Church of Christ, pastored by Rev. N.C. Calhoun, will host a “United Service" on Sunday, April 3 at 7 p.m. Churches participating in the service are Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, pastored by Rev. Edwin Neff; St. Matthews United Church of Christ, pas tored by Rev. Claroice Stumb and First United Church of Christ, pastored by Rev. Lee Jessup. At 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 3, the Usher Board of New Em manuel will celebrate their anniversary, with ushers from various churches in the city attending. All ushers in the city and the public is cordially invited^to attend these ser vices. ’Two weeks from this Sunday "The Good News of Miracles Outreach" and The Pastor’s Aid of New Emmanuel will sponsor a ‘Sing-a-’Thon and Sermon” at 2 p.m. Rev.
