Lounges ■ Returns To Soul ' Train Saturday Jermaine Jackson returns to Soul Train as a solor act this weekend sharing center stage with female vocalist, Tata Vega. Best known as the lead singer and bass player with his internationally acclaimed musical family, The Jackson S, Jermaine has now embark ed upon a new career which he hopes will allow him to write, r* nuu, cvcuiuttujf, CIllCT the business end of the indus try. His unique style and vocal depth are demonstrated on “Let’s Be Young Tonight,” “My Touch of Madness” and “Look Past My Life.” Although virtually unknown, .Tata Vega has been favorably compared with Chaka Khan, Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight. A petite young woman with a powerful voice, she show cases her vocal magnetism on her first single, “Full Speed Ahead,” and “Never Had a Dream Come True.” Tata, a native of Queens, Long Island, began her pro fessional career with the cult band, Pollution, after per forming seven months with the Loo Angeles production of HAIR. . The Roper Organisation, attitudes toward television POPULAR RECORDING GROUP “HOT" —torments music with frankness Hot’s First Album Is Hot ay jacquie Levister Post Staff Writer . It seems quite appropriate that one of the botest record ing groups around these days is called “Hot.” A trio of ladies from three distinct ethnic backgrounds - Owen Owens (black), Cathy Carson (white) and Juanita Curie! (Mexican) form this highly professional group with powerful emotion packed Their first hit single "Angel In Your Arms” and their first album entitled “Hot” expres sed everything that men have been saying for years, but now from a woman’s point of view. Although the members of the group are not especially femi nist, they say that they are taking a firm stand and are presenting in their music the feelings of many women with a frankness that has bam absent from popular songs in the past. This firm stand can be heard in the songs that Hot has written and performed: ’If You Don’t Lave Her’ and “Why Don’t You Believe In You- Man” along with The Right Pooling At The Wrong Time” and “You Can Do It” all songs written by women presenting their point of view. The group’s appeal is inter national. They not only have captured an audience in this country, but are attracting attention with a Spanish ver sion of their first hit "Angel In Your ‘Arms,” and plan to record versions in other lan guages. Gwen and Cathy met while auditioning for the Wolfman Jack Show in Los Alleles where they were selected and toured. The two persons group was called Sugar A Spice while with Wolfman Jack's Shock A Rock Review and when they did the feature shot on the Bill Cosby televi sion series in the fall of MTS. After several tours with Wolf man and two years from their first meeting, Gwen and Cathy met Juanita and formed “Hot 99 Gwen Owens, the black counterpart of Hot, was rear ed in Detroit and has been a professional singer since her mid-teens. She bad appeared on stage with Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and The Origi nate before she decided to a * move to Los Angeles. Since moving to California Gwen has worked on stage with Jose Feliciano, Ann Mar garet, Raquel Welch, Bill Cos by, Ed McMahon and Nancy Sinatra. She did the Diahann Carroll television show as well as background studio record ing for Billy Preston, A1 Wil son, Donny Osmond, yvayne Newton, Sammy Davis Jr. and many more. She has recorded singles for Motown and Casa blanca Records. In 1971, Gwen went to Brazil to work as a singer and while there received an award for best singer at the VI Festival International Da Cancao Po pular in Rio De Janeiro. She also won an award at the Festival for best lyrics. Evi dence that she is a strong lyricist can be found in the songs she has written on the album. * Cathy Carson was born in Indiana and reared in Wichita, Kansas, which she considers her hometown. Cathy came from a very musical family, her mother’s a piano teacher and Cathy herself plays piano and played viola in the Kansas See HOT on Page B2 I . . t™ ■» Steve McQueen To Star In WSOC Saturday Movie Steve McQueen stars as a veteran race driver obsessed with winning the top prize in the highly competitive 24-hour endurance test at the famed international auto track in ‘‘LeMans,” an action drama ,to be colorcast on Channel Nine’s “NBC Saturday Night n 4 »L._ »m 1 n « m _ ,*•» a y M) dl 3 pm. McQueen portrays Michael 'Delaney, survivor of a serious accident in the annual compe tition just a year before, who has returned to participate in the annual Le Vingt-quatre Heures de Mans. The race begins and soon becomes a contest between Delaney and Erich Stahler, a Ferrari ace. But again, Delan ey demolishes his car and is sent to the hospital. After being released follow ing treatment for minor inju ries, he spends some time with Lisa Belgetti, whose husband perished in the previous year's competition. As the race draws to a close, the manager of the Porsche team calls upon Delaney to meet the challenge of the Ferrari team and make one final attempt at victory. Las Vegas strip Provides Backdrop For Sunday Movie The Las Vegas Strip pro vides the backdrop for “Benny and Barney, Las Vegas Un dercover,’ ’ the second half of a double feature presentation on Channel Nine Sunday, May 29 at 9:Sd p.m. I Jack Cassidy, Jane Sey mour, Hugh O'Brien and Pat ,Harrington guest-star, with ; cameo appearances by Rod ney Dangerfield, Marty Allen, viooei, ana noDoy Troup.
