Pineville Dinner New Play Has Neither Humor Nor Action By Jacquie Levister Post Staff Writer "Hot Shot" a light comedy is the Pineville Dinner Theatre’s latest offering. The ‘‘pre Broadway" show stars Gene Barry. The talented Mr. Berry may very well take his show to Broadway. In my most hum ble opinion the cosmopolitan Broadway audiences will not sustain the play. In its present form, the play has neither enough humor nor action to counterbalance the weak plot and unimaginative set. • Gene Barry’s performance is excellent however, and it is quite obvious that the support ing cast members are well prepared for their roles. The after show monologue by Barry was everything the play should have been. With an air of spontaneity and intimancy, the monologue a lone gave the audience a sense of having received their mo ney’s worth. This play was heralded to be the piece de resistance of the Pineville shows. It was touted to have an outstanding star, an experienced cast and the backing to make it to Broad way. (Then looking very pen sive he continued) I guess I’ve got my version too. I never wanted for anything when I was a child. Yeah, I was spoiled. My mother did it. We were very ‘middle class Black' darling, you know how that thing goes don’t you? I grew out of it because things couldn’t always be that way. Growing up had a lot to do with it. One of the major things I had to deal with was the negative attitudes from people of our race; envy. I never had formal musical training even though I could have taken lessons when I was a child had I wanted to. I spent r- . -- one year at City College in Los Angeles but I knew I wasn't going to stay because I was about being in those clubs doing my thing. Plus, I never liked classical music. I want ed to play but I didn’t want to go through the period of being told what to play for the sake of learning. I am going to open a school for those young peo ple that want to play popular or rock music. It is a shame that kids have to give up their end objective to learn music.
