Education and Welfare survey uf this nation's doctors showed that, on the average, too many of them -- w hite and black - do not give their patients medical counseling and advice. The survey, compiled troni information provided b> the doctors themselves, shows u total of 645 million visits to doctors' offices from May. 1973. to April 1974 Females' visit accounted lor three out of five, or 60 percent The average person made three visits, and 40 percent ol all visits were of general and family practitioners Examples of the kinds ot complaints that brought peo ple to doctors: throat soreness coughing, a cold, fever, aller gic skin reaction, and weight gain Of all the problems that brought patients to doctors' office, 80 percent were consi dered not serious by the doc PicTVPay Reports Record Second Quarter Pic 'N Pay Stores, Inc. (AMEX) reported today that sales and earnings in the second quarter ended Decem ber 24, 1977 were the highest for any quarter in the com pany's history. The announce ment was made by Alvin E. Le vine, president of the self service shoe chain, who noted that sales and earnings for the first half were also a record for the period. In the 13 weeks ended De cember 24, 1977 sales were $22,183,000 compared with $17, 590,000 a year ago. Net income was $1,959,000 or $.65 per share compared with $1,479, 000 or $.50 per share in last year's second quarter. In the 26 weeks ended De cember 24, 1977 sales were $36,037,000 compared with $30, 466,000 last year. Net income was $2,571,000 or $.86 per share yçrsus $2,252,000 or $.76 p«r share in the comparable ye*r-eartter period tors tnemselves. That is, eight out of 10 people who visited the doctors office would have gotten better even it they h.iu stayed at home The treatments given u> patients included one ol. or a combination of, the follow mg lab tests, referral to another physician, psychiatric assis lance, drug therapy, medical counseling and advice ol these treatments Medical counseling and ad vice is most important in helping individuals assume more responsibility lor main taining their own health . A good question here is During how many of the visits did doctors give medical coun seling and advice?" The survey results indicate that doctors either don t ha\e. don't make, or don't take the time to give people medical and health information. For example, the second most commonly cited pa tient's principal problem was throat soreness. The sore throat brought more than 2u million people to doctors of I ices. Through doctors, 89 percent of the time considered it not serious, or only slightly so. they treated it with drugs 81 percent of the time and gave medical counseling and ad vice only 10 percent ol the time. Similar statistical dispari ties between symptoms diag nosed as not serious and the prescribing of costly drug the rapy exist, the survey reveal ed, in doctors dealing with the cold. Colds rank seventh a mong the 20 most common health complaints, coughing, fever, 11th; allergic skin reac tion, 12th, and weight gain, 15th. ' Since black people sutler most from serious and not so serious medical and health problems, they logically need medical counseling and ad vice most, but receive it less Instead, drugs are given along with the frequently heard statement: 'Trust me and do what I say. 1 know what's best for you.
