A Black Perspective You & Your Health Brenda Child Abuse According to reported hist ory, assault on children has occurred since the early days ~ of Biblical times infanticide was demonstrated and reveal ed in the writings of the Bible. Until the 1940's even, Chinese children were sold by their parents and forced to work. Recognition of child abuse in the United States led to cert ain laws and regulations to protect the rights of children. In 1875, the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (SPCC) was estab . lished umia aouse can be defined in different ways because there can be many different types or forms of assault. Usually it means the more obvious forms of physical abuse such as assault, neglect, and abandonment but forget ting the forms of social mal treatment such as psychologic mainpulation and exploitat ion. There seems to be greater emphasis placed on symptoms rather than underlying causes. Because of underfe; porting, either willfully or because of failure to recognize that it does exist, It is almost impossible to appreciate the full extent of the problem. There have been several studies done recently on child abuse from many different aspects. Some support the idea that there is a higher rate or incidence of child abuse among blacks, or even famil ies with lower socio-economic " backgrounds. There are many factors that need to be recog nized here. Many times within thé home of blacks or lower socio-economic families, we find several people visiting and or investigating for many different reasons. In these homes, there is a large per centage of social workers visiting or public health per sons, etc., who are in and out of the home. These persons are legally and professionally responsible for reporting abuse or questionable abuse, η ffamilies with greater in αη· , these persons are not pri κ tit in the home and pro blems can χ . once* led some what better. Hie point here is tli.it reporting η/ί hi Id abuse may be one of the factors to consider. Studies have shown there are certain -haracterlstics of child abuae: 1. The abused child is usually under 4 years of age there is no indication that one. sex is abused more·than the other. 2. What the family or par ents say about thaae children, may be different from what la observed by the child's behav ior or physical appearance 3. Freauently. the abuser was abused as a child also. 4. Abuse ranges from actual burns, factored or broken bones to less obvious signs such is severe anemia, mal- _ _ nutrition, or dehydration. Sometimes, child abuse is detected on routine doctor " ' visits and is investigated but it has been found that the social worker plays an important role in the detection of abuse.
