Fashion Fair Model. Modeling Represents Progressive Field To Clements By Teresa Burns Post Staff Writer Musicians play, the audi ence silences and the Ebonj Fashion Fair begins. Th« models stroll on stage-each possessing a unique style anc grace that immediately draws the audience's attention tc them and their outfits But what is behind the beau tiful attire, the make-up and appealing faces? Each model is different, and of course everyone has his or her own reason for modeling For Eb ony Fashion Fair model, Christina Clements, her job is not one^imensional Instead modeling represents a prog ressive field. “I’m very interested in fash ion, art, retailing, T V. com mercials, and all of this is related to modeling,' Gements said. So through modeling and related connections, Clements said her future ambition is "...to devote time and energy into acting...commercial and film.” Clements has already ap peared in television com mercials, television ads, in fashion magazines and pres ently she is touring as a runway model with the Ebony Fashion Fair. Female models are usually at least 5 feet 8 inches tall without shoes with impressive features and a natural ability to wear highly designed fash ions. These are the require ments Clements had to meet to become an Ebony Fashion Fair model. But it takes more than the correct height and stunning appearance to reach the mod eling heights Clements has achieved. A successful model must also know herself. ‘‘It’s like any other job. You must have a strong sense of yourself - Know who you are and how you want to present yourself to the public There are so many images you're portraying, you can become confused,” Clements said Clements is 22 and has been modeling professionally for three years. “I started modeling my 2nd year of college (Garland umA. to inter t • - M' • vr*"*}* t Pine-Thanksgiving Double Treat A free double treat will be offered by the Creative Arts Department of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Tuesday November 6, at 8 p m. in Rowe Recital Hall The UNCC Wind and Jazz Ensemble will join forces to perform a musical excursion from Bach to “Superman,” from Count Bassie to Weather Report. Along the way the groups will give a respectful nod to Maynard Ferguson, Eric Coates, John Williams, Doc SeverinsQD Jerome Kern, Sammy Nestico, Thad Jones, Freddie Hubbard, Barry Man ilow, Chuck Mangione and Diana Ross. ine program tor tne 24 member Wind Ensemble will include Bach’s “Chorale Pre lude” from Wachet Aug, “Knightsbridge March’’ by Eric Coates, “Three Sketches for Wind” by Grundman, and “Superman” by John Willi ams. In addition, Juelene Craw ford, a junior in Creative Arts from Harrisburg, will conduct “Phantasy for Band” by G. Matherns«" The 25-member Jazz En semble will round out the ev^fetag with new and old vocal and instrumental jazz favorites Their program will incli'de r’oiint Basie's "Lil’ DarfirT.’’Weather Reports^ “Birdlana,” music from "The Wiz,’’ “Nokomis” by Steve Wright and “It Only Happens Every Time” by Thad Jones Musicians making up the two ensembles include IJNCC students and community vol unteers Robert (iehner, ass ociate professor of music, is director of both groups POST REPORTER TERESA BURNS ....Interviews Christina Clements College in Boston* part time Both placed demand* on me, but 1 wanted to finish school." Clements said. After she received her de gree in business. Clements went straight to an agency and continued her impressive ca reer full time. Clements is now a member of Screen Actors Guild < SAG). American Federated Tele vision and Radio Arts. ART and Stewart Agency. These organizations help Clements advance in her ca reer.and through modeling she is able to travel and learn about people. “I am constantly relating to people and learning more a bout human relations I enjoy t totally,” Clements said Also, Clements travels ex tensively - seeing different places and working with var ious performers All of this is part of the glorious model package. On the negative side, Clements could only think of one sour point. The disadvantage is the time modeling consumes. “ft is necessary to organize your time just to wash your hair and paint your nails," she said. The days when Clements has to tour with Ebony Fash ion Fair are hectic. She begins at 7 a m , jogs for 15 minutes, leaves the hotel at 9 a.m. and usually has to travel for three hours by Greyhound bus. One* she arrives at the hotel, she checks in and gets herself settled. By 6 p.m. or 7 she is on tne job-modeling to the beat of an accompanying live band. Before the Ebony Fashion Fair Tour is completed Clements will have travelled 29.738 miles and visited more than 150 cities. In 1978-79, as many as 256, 857 people saw the Ebony Fashion Fair. Even if the country faces a recession, Clements believes people will continue to pour in to see the program. “There will always be con sumers and they'll always have to fill the desire to be involved in fashion and retail ing. especially during a re cession. People have to have these things to pacify the hard times," Clements said. Whatever reason people come to the Ebony Fashion Fair, they can expect profess ional excellence. And this year model-actress Christina Clements helped to make the Ebony Fashion Fair a suc cess. EBONY STYLES If you didn’t attend the .Ebony Fashion Fair you might be happy to know that the fashionable dresses had various lengths. You won’t look outdated with long skirts. The models dress lengths were two inches below the knee as well as right above the knee. And there were alot of uneven hem lines: long in the back-short in the front. The pants lengths even var ied. So, if you think “high water" pants are out, guess what, they are in this year. Some pants leg lengths were still over the shoe, but more often the pants length stopped at model's ankle. Popular shades were ultra violet, black and blue. In scene VII the models wore exclusively dressed in blue outfits. uuicc uicmc "03 \_uiui Explosion’ the models also wore yellow with black, green with burgundy, and often an array of colors and patterns that actually exploded on sta ge. Being slim and in shape is a must for those clingy jersey fashions. But, if you’re too shy to show, you can cover up with fur or feather capes. Feathers are really in this year-feather capes, feathers in hats, hair and even feathers in shoes. 22nd YEAR The Delta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority has presented the Ebony Fashion Fair in Charlotte for 22 years. Each year the program’s proceeds are donated to char ity. According to Angela Taylor undergraduate advisor for the local chapter, state secretary and publicity director for this I year's Ebony Fashion Fair, all Cnarlotte proceeds will go to organizations such as the NAACP, Big Brothers and Sisters, YMCA, YWCA and the United Negro College Fund. The donations were present ed to some of these organiza tions during the program's intermission. The sorority also gives one full scholarship to a four year college and one full scholar ship to a two year college Two partial scholarships to a vo cational and technical school are also donated, according to Taylor. One such scholarship was given to Diane Phillips and this spring she will graduate from UNC Law School Door prizes were given out at Ebony Fashion Fair's in termission by the Delta Zeta Chapter, More Cigarettes and Sarah Coventry Jewelry I- ' Carole and Norma Jean Darden introduced their recently published book, “Spoonbread and Strawberry Wine,” to Bennett College — ■in 'i. students and faculty Thesis:* .r< ed at a chapel assembl\ and —y,.. • POST Pan* 5 BT THE WAY... Have you been reading and analyzing his several moves? But I can remind you that a lot of blood, sweat, i tears, and some deaths were experienced so that Black people can register to vote. And, I do have the right to extol the fact that our apathy and accepting political crumbs are primary reasons why the "freedom train” has been stalled, or side tracked, the past few years. It is okay to have a one party affiliation, but don’t let . that loyalty blind you to the fact that you can, and must, ask questions and seek changes when decisions are detrimental to the forward progress of Black Americans.
