IIW SINGER GLADYS KNIGHT ~.Wiih The Pips Story Of Gladys Knight And The Pips Is Intriguing? By Teresa Burns Post Staff Writer The story of Gladys Knight and The Pips. It's intriguing, exciting and sometimes the closeness be tween the family could bring tears to one's eyes. For Gladys Knight, her brother Bubba, and cousins Ed and William, the unity started the day she was born. "We all came to the hospital to help bring Gladys home," recalled Ed. The four of them sang one day at one of Bubba's birthday parties. From there they performed at church teas and various family functions. Gladys' first notes were blurted at the age of four, and even then the tone of professionalism prevailed. At the age of seven Gladys led the group on Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour and won the 12,000 grand prize. Their first single "Whistle My Love," was released on the Bruns wick label in 1958. Soon after, the tours began. In 1961 a proportional hit called "Every Beat of My Heart" hit the RAB and pop charts and earned Gladys and The Pips appearances on important tele vision programs such as the Park er House Breakfast Show. During this time they also appeared on the Supersonic Attractions roadshop which featured such legendary performers as Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, and Β. B. King, litis was an advancement. For many years the group had performed in many small clubs Bubba called the "Chitlin' Circuit." Even while the group continued to record for Fury Records, they were on the road · rough days on the Chitlin' Circuit. During this time they had a few RAB hits including "Letter Full of Tears," "Operator," and "You Broke Your Promise." Their first album, "Letter Full of Tears" was also released under the Fury label. Their next move was to Max Records. They hit (he charts again right away with "Givin' Up Is Hard To Do," a classic song people jus^ never tire of. In 1966 another move was made, this time to Motown and the hits rolled around like beads of water on a hot skillet "Walk In My Shoes," "Every body Needs Love," "Should've Been Me," "Take Me In Your Arms and Love Me," and, of course, the biggest one "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" were the hits that certified Gladys Knight and The Pips as pure artists in their trade. The string continued: "Neither One Of Us (Want Goodbye)", "Friendship Train," and "I Don't Want To Do Wrong " With Motown the group experienced something pleasant. "The Motown period was when things really started bios soming for us," Ed explained. "We started playing gigs and the feeling was real good." The Motown itch lasted seven years until the decision was made to move on again. With each move a growth occurred; this time it was with Buddah Records. Inter national acclaim was acquired by the group with "Imagination" fol lowed by "Midnight Train" and "You're The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me." By this time their accomplishments, talents and unity had created awards unimaginable. Mental rewards as well as those given by the indus try's experts and the public were attained.
