Saturday Wight January 24 Three-Hour Spectacular To Raise Funds For IJNCF " "The Lou Rawls Parade of Stars,” a three-hour spectacular fund raiser for the United Negro College Fund, will be telecast January 24 on WBTV, Channel 3 from 8-11 p.m. Three black North Carolina in stitutions will benefit from this telethon: Johnson C. Smith Uni versity, Livingstone College, and Barber-Scotia College. Thirty eight other private, predominantly black colleges and universities across the country will also bene fit. From these schools over 50,000 students will Agpedt from the support given By viewers. To date $2 million has been raised. Many Charlotteans will be in vited to parties hosted by friends , and supporters of the United Negro College Fund in their homes, restaurants and nightclubs. But anyone is welcome to contri bute to the UNCF just by calling the telephone number that will appear on the screen during the WBTV broadcast. Last year $16.5 million was contributed by Ameri cans in support of Mack higher education. In conjunction with Anheuser Busch, who provided the seed money for this effort, Lou Rawls and guests hope to raise $19 million this year. Rawls pointed out re cently: “I never had any questions but that Anheuser-Busch would support the ‘Parade of Stars’ and UNCF in a special way. Over the years in which I have been asso ciated with my friends at Bud weiser, one thing stands out - they are genuinely concerned about helping all minorities.” The special, which has already been aired in other major cities throughout the country, will fea ture Rawls singing his great hits: “Groovy People," “Tomorrow,” and “This One’s For You," and the UNCF theme song “A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste." Bill Cosby’s humor will explode on the screen, and Muhammad Ali, ap pearing at the personal request of Rawls, will deliver a message. The Mills Brothers will capture your attention with their classic “Be My Life's Companion." Students, alumni, and civic or ganization member from North Carolina area will pitch in with the planning process, answer ing phones, and helping with the counting.
