— By Clara B. Lawrence - SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON Mrs. Lawrence - subject: Experiencing God’s Presence June 28, 1981 Lesson The Marvelous Acts of God Knowing The Unique God God of the Covenant Community Scripture Deuteronomy 4:32-34 Deuteronomy 4:35-36 Deuteronomy 4:37-40 Background Scripture Deut. 4:15-49 LESSON BACKGROUND Many scholars believe that this chapter is a condensed summary of the entire Book. The chapter includes the first address with a strong exhortation to obey the law in response to the redemptive work of God in Israel’s history. The whole Book of Deutero nomy deals with the covenant between the Lord and His people. (Israel.) In Moses’ day, it proclaimed and described' that covenant; in Josiah’s day, it was used to call for a renewal covenant. Deuteronomy 4:14-23 shows that Moses dissuaded the Israelites against adultry. He also was aware that God knew that they have an inate tendency to create false gods. So the warning was: “Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which He made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the Lord thy God hath forbidden you.” (4:23). LESSON EXPLAINED We are studying the last of four lessons of Unit I; “Foundations for Faith.” Moses again appealed to Israel’s history to convince the people of God’s rightful claim upon their allegiance. Verse 32 begins the final paragraph of -Meses^—first-address._The._word "for” connects the statement that follows witlT“ that which precedes as its cause. In it he challenge the people to inquire the earliest time of man’s aboae oh earth, to search the records of all times and places, to see whether anything so great had happened before or had been heard of. Moses’ question, "Did every people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou has heard, and live?”-, was to assure the people that His appearances were for the purpose to save, not to destroy. (Clark’s Commentary.) The question had reference to the awesome confrontation at Sinai. Then Moses asked a second question in verse 34, and it should begin: "Has any god ever attempted to...take a nation for him self from the midst of another nation*.'” (RSV): Moses was emphasizing the unique action of the Lord in selecting Israel for His purpose and dramaticallv leading them out of Egypt. Nothing like that had happened before. The purpose of the entire revelation of God’s voice to them was to “instruct” as Moses explained. Read and compare the following scripture: Isa. 8:11 and 28:26; Psalms 16:7, in order to verify the above statement, “instruct.” The term "consider it in thine heart”.., means literally, to bring back into thy heart or recall. In the closing verse we see Moses urging the Israelites to obey the law, for there were certain benefits and advantages of obedience. Things would go well for them and their descendants, and they would "continue to live in the land that the Lord” (TEV) was giving them forever. >m/J TRUTHS TO LIVE BY 1. Believing in God’s purpose for one’s life can provide zest and endurance. 2. The Lord of the Bible is the one true God. 3. God’s imcomparable acts should stimu _latepeo£les^awareness of His presence.
