Church News Briefs “Two Pastor’s Appreciation Services” Will Honor Rev. Wilson Mitchell By Teresa Burns Post Staff Writer Members and guests of Chappell Memorial Baptist Church will hold two pastor's appreciation days for Rev Wilson Mitchell - Friday and Sunday. Octo ber 2 and 4. respectively. Rev McKissick, pastor of St Mark Baptist Church will deliver the sermon Friday evening. His con gregation and choir will also be special guests. On Sunday, Rev. Griffin, pastor of Galilee Baptist Church and his choir and congregation will be pre sent. He will also deliver an inspiring sermon. Rev. Mitchell, pastor of Chappell Memorial Baptist Church since 1974, led the present membership into the edifice on 412 South Hoskins Ave. They were once worshipping at Bethune School on 10th and Graham Streets before it was torn down The membership under Rev. Mitchell has grown tremendously and he has gained the respect and love of not only members of the church but of the commun ity as well. Rev. Mitchell will be honored for his many hours of dedicated service to the works and words of God. You are invited to share in these occasions. PAUL COMMUNITY MISSIONARY BAPTIST Revival services at St. Paul Community Mission ary Baptist Church will begin October 5 with Rev. J. D. Ballard as evangel ist. Rev. James Ballard is presently pastor of United Metropolitan Baptist ^Church, Winston-Salem. * He has pastored there since 1959. He is also chairman of the Ordination Council, Rowan Baptist Association of North Carolina. The first black to attend Duke Uni versity Divinity School, Rev. Ballard graduated among the top ten in a class of 177 receiving his Master’s of Divinity de gree. He was awarded the Doctor of Divinity Degree by Shaw University in 1978. Rev. Ballard, now 45, began ministering 25 years ago. At the age of 24 he began to pastor United Me tropolitan Baptist Church and merged two Baptist congregations in 1965. His wife is Eleanor Pear Adams Ballard and they have one son, Derek Dur rell. St. Paul Community Mis sionary Baptist Church warmly invites you to share in this revival. Rev. Robert M. She was honored with a plaque from the Board of Christian Education Rev A. C. Hun nicutt, pastor of Green ville, presented Mrs. Owens with the plaque. She also received a Bulova wrist watch, a gold tray set, three baskets of beau tiful flowers and beautiful cards from her adopted families and the youth which she still refers to as her children. Mrs. Owens organized the first youth choir at Greenville Tabernacle and continued the choir to the present. She has served as —supervisor of the Buds of Promise, Sunday~Schoui— Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Played for the Sunday School and the Senior Choir, sang on the Senior Choir and became a member of Steward Board No. 3. She is now a member of Missionary Circle No. 3, member of the Adult Sun day School Class and Building Fund Secretary. Now a retired Charlotte Mecklenburg School teach er, Mrs. Owens is involved in various community ac tivities. She enjoys check ing on the sick and shut —hv—visit^, raiu_ and - cards. She also Jielps wKen someone needs transport ation to the doctor, to vote or to go grocery shopping. Reading, knitting, cro cheting, macrameing and writing poems are a few of Mrs. Owens’ pastimes. Her first poem, “The Lone Walker” was published in 1980. Many ads congratulating Mrs. Owens for faithful service in the church and community were presented during the program. The youth gave 5500 to the Building Fund in her name also. There is something spe cial about Mrs. Willie Owens and Greenville Me morial AME Zion Church wanted to let her know just how much they loved her. Rev. A. C. CLINTON CHAPEL AME ZION During September CTin ton Chapel AME Zion Church held its organiza tional meeting with their pastor. Rev. Retoy Gaston, "presiding-— _ The following organiza tions were added to the many other affiliations in the church: A Fellowship Chib for Young Men; a Boy Scout Troop; a Girl Scout Troop; and a Young Adult Choir. Rev. Gaston has asked each member of Clinton Chapel to give of their time, talents and services to train young members and to uplift the church.
