F -_;Bv Bill JohnioitaM^^.^. I -"" SPORTS BEAT = i IF YOU ASK ME!. If you don’t know the answer, don’t answer the question! The leadership position in the Southern Division of the CIAA will be at stake Saturday afternoon when Fayetteville State clashes with North Carolina Central in Durham. The favored Eagles leadTHe series 4.0. Led by new coach William Head, Fayetteville's Broncos will be looking for | their first victory over the Eagles. They have not scored on NCCU since 1976. -Lawrence Pettis, an outstanding football player at North Carolina Central and Second Ward High School, has informed me that there are six local gridders on the NCCU squad, rather than the two reported here recently. According to Pettis, Gerald Fraylon is the starting quarterback. “He’s a former Myers Park star,” informs Pettis, who explained that Zonta Laney, who played at West Charlotte, is the first-string fullback. Laney is currently out of the lineup with a chipped bone. The other Charlotte natives on the squad are tight end Henry Berry of Garinger, tackle Willie Long of Garinger and^ tackle Walter Lewis of West Charlotte. Would you believe that Johnson C. Smith, ’ which tangles with arch-rival North Caro -lina A&T State in Greensboro Saturday afternoon, has beaten the Aggies only eight times in the time-honored series? In the meantime,. A&T has won 21 games, includ ing the last seven in a row. Our Bulls last whipped the Aggies,, 15-11, back in 1973. A&T won by an embarrassing 45-13 a year ago. Freshman Darrel Wesley, who is every body’s choice as the best thing to happen to our Golden Bulls since the construction of the Student Union, scampered 132 yards with 18 carries against Bowie State to up his average to 5.7 yards per run. It was his second 100-yards plus game of the season. Lucky for some businessmen there are secretaries who can spell. You’d have to agree that defensive tackle Alvin Ellington of JCSU is overworked. The one-man wrecking crew for our Bulls has six quarterback sacks, 42 tackles (17 solo) and two fumble recoveries in only four contests. Incidentally, our Bulls will be in tip-top shape when they take the field ^aturday afternoon against A&T. Anthony Wicker continues to amaze with his sensational punting. He continues to get _the pace for the punters in the conference, with an average of 44.2 yards per boot. That’s putting a foot in the oval! Now that Billy Packer has signed to serve i as an analyst with CBS, look for either Bill Russell or Dick Stockton to join the regular NBC basketball announcing team. The guess here is that, if business ties permit, Russell with get the assignment. Bryant Gumbel, the best sportscaster in the business, will emcee the annual Lom bardi “College Lineman of the Year” award dinner set for December 10 in Houston, Texas. The proceeds will benefit the Ameri can Cancer Society Research. Thanks to those of you who agree that the man on the P.A. system at the first Johnson C. Smith football game talked too much. Let’s hope he’ll be more professional when our Bulls meet S.C. State here a week from Saturday. I hear that trouble is brewing up at Norfolk State University where several basketball players have charged head coach Lucias Mitchell of “demeaning and inhumane treatment,’’ "false and mislead ing recruiting inducements,” and “conduct ing excessive and extreme practice ses sions.” One source says Mitchell will be fired if the charges are found to be true. University officials are looking into the allegations. Mean Joe Greene did so well in the Coca-Cola commercial that he will next turn his talent to helping fight arthritis. _SlinnF.N THOUGHT - the reason black leaders are fighting each other TaTfiaFlKSy have no other worthy opponent. life Old Crystal Ball is off to a great start, with 20 correct picks in 23 games to date. That’s an 86 percent accuracy rating! Taking the easy ones first, Bethune-Cook man will defeat Delaware State and Florida A&M will have little trouble pasting Howard. N.C. A&T will continue its domina tion over our Bulls and Morgan State will run roughshod over Bowie State. Virginia State will lick Livingstone and Virginia Union will lace St. Paul’s. Elizabeth City will slip past Hampton, but S.C. State will fall to Alcorn. Norfolk State will give strength to the belief that the CIAA northern division plays better football by hipping Winston-Salem State. N.C. Central will take over undisputed claim to first place in the southern division with a ,. convincing win over Fayetteville State. Prior To A&T Game Harris Concern Over Golden Bulls’ Intensity? special To The Post Johnson C. Smith head coach Wylie Harris ex pressed concern over the Golden Bulls’ intensity the first three quarters against Bowie State before the of fense exploded for three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. ‘ We’ve been too tight the past two weeks," explained Harris. "We know we have good material, but we haven’t moved along to peaking yet." The JCSU head coach should have little trouble rousing his troops for the annual rivalry with A&T State Saturday. The 1:30 pm. contest will officially open the Aggies’ Alumni Stadium with ceremonies at halftime. A&T State's vaunted run ning game has sputtered enough for two losses in a row to MEAC rivals S.C. State and Bethune-Cook man. With the J.C. Smith se condary shutting down op ponent airways, it’s a safe bet that Jim McKinley will be sending speedster Wy man Pitts, -fullback Char lie Sutton and back-ups Danny Thomas and Mike Jones-right down the Bulls’ throats. All-American guard Mike West will be the main lineman to open •H SI BAM) AM) MAJORETTES me junnsont. amitn university march ing band and majorett°s performed at the Carolina Lightnin' championship soccer game recently. The Golden Bulls will need all the offensive di versity it can muster with all Aggie defensive line men and linebackers back from last year's 8-3 team. A&T State's one great weakness is the inexperi ence of its secondary The Bulls' fortunes may depend on John Henry Thomas' arm and a bevy of talented receivers. Thomas has spread the aerial attack to nine different Bull receiv ers. The Bulls enter back to back contests with A&T State and S.C. State in good health. Freshman running back Darrel Wesley looked strong gaining 132 yards on 18 carries after being ham pered with a previous ankle sprain Fullback Jeff Steele continues to have a big year averaging 90 yards offense a game Punter Anthony Wicker is listed as the second best punter in NCAA II and the NAIA nationally with a 44 2 yard punt average The Greenville. The task was made harder by virtue of the fact that the game was at East, a place where West Char lotte never wins. They beat the Eagles 20-12 and this week’s ‘‘Player of the Week” is partially the reason wy. With the Lions at their own 30, end Shelton Boyer caught a pass at the Eagle two to set up a touchdown by Eric Glenn on the next play. Later in the game, at the Eagle 40, Boyer faked a piirit arid raced down the sideline 40 yards for a touchdown. Late in the fourth quarter the Eagles fumbled at the West Charlotte 48. Quarter back Struggy Smith pitched out to Durain An derson who threw a 52 yard bomb to Boyer to sidetrack the Eagles and leave the Lions in a four way tie for third place with Olympic, Harding •> and North Mecklenburg. The Lions can control their own destiny. They have beaten the Trojans. The other teams will come in the fol lowing weeks. “I enjoy playing foot ball,” said Boyer, who wants to play at a major Running 52 yards for a touchdown, faking a punt, then running 40 yards for a second touchdown and then carrying the ball for another crucial 37 yards...sounds like a professional feat. It's all part of the professional ism portrayed by West Charlotte senior Shelton Boyer during West Charlotte's last game. These, among other factors, are reasons he received Burger King's (Beatties Ford Road) "Outstanding Football Player of the Week'' honor.
