United Negro College Fund Showered With Generous Gift The United Negro College Fund, Inc. was showered with a generous gift in a $1.5 million scholar ship fund provided by Walter Annenberg. You may not know who Annen berg is but the product of his genius and imagination can be seen on newsstands each week in the form of “TV Guide.” He is also the former U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain and founder and president of the Annenberg School of Communications at the Uni versity of Pennsylvania and the University of Southern California The scholarship fund has been entitled the "21st Century Scholars Program." It will identify and assist outstanding undergraduates and promising graduating seniors at UNCF’s 41 private, predomin ately black colleges. This fund is a gift from Annen berg who has been inspired by the performance of young black * athletes - superstars in the Ameri can sports arena. “Bright, young people are our nation’s most valuable natural re source," Annenberg expressed “This program is designed to identify the brightest students on UNCF campuses and make sure Trapper John, M.D.— A sweet, gentle, mentally re tarded young man and a super cilious, sarcastic old hermit find that they have something valuable to offer to one another, on "Trap per John, M.C.," Sunday, January 4, at 10 p m on WBTV,€harmef3 -The retarded man, Danny, work ing at the hospital as an orderly, becomes a patient after collapsing while running in a track meet. Jake, the hermit, is hospitalised after being discovered unconscious near his mountain lair. An ac complished cellist, Jake has brought his preciouscello with him to the hospital. When Jake catches Danny toying with the cello, Jake Danny is devestaged. But what begins as a hostile relationship evolves into something deeply poignant and significant to the pair. Meanwhile, Danny is setting himself up for another devastating blow, this one, paradoxically, from friendly and tender-hearted nurse Gloria "Ripples" Brancusi. It's the kind of oppor !^tyf?!Sadvantaged youngsters “, “toy are going to succeed today. The UNCF’s 41 private, pre dominately black colleges have about 50,000 students each year. More than half of these students come from families earning less than $12,000 annually and over 90 percent require financial aid The typical UNCF student re ports that his or her parents are . not capable, financially, to ass.^ them with the cost of a four-year college education. Annenberg and his gift appeared at a crucial time for the many —students depending on finaneief aid. Many cutbacks due to federal regulations caused the largest federal student assistance pro gram, The Pell Grants, to be reduced by nearly $4 million to ~~ UNu>- colleges alone. Three quarters of all UNCF students received Pell Grants com pared to 25 percent of college students nationally. Overall the projection is that UNCF colleges will lose a mini mum of $38 million in student aid by 1985 as a result of federal budget cuts. Christopher F. Edley, Executive Directorol the United Negro CoL lege Fund stated: “The only way that we can prevent these cuts from causing a ’brain drain’ is by creating innovative programs that reward scholarship and leadership and that seriously address the needs of our neediest students." "Walter Annenberg has cut to the heart of this matter. He in stintively understands the absolute urgency of educating our most dis advantaged young people and the danger to our nation if we do not respond," Edley continued This is not the first contribution Annenberg has made to the UNCF. He was active in the UNCF’s Pennsylvania Annual Campaign; Jie contributed a $100,000 challenge David A.
