Black Women’s Caucus Is Not Strictly Political By Karen Parker Post Staff Writer The Black Women’s Cau cus was created in 1974 primarily as a political organization to encourage voter registration in the black communities of Mecklenburg County. ine organization was formed nearly nine years ago on March 3 by mem bers of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. "At that time hundreds of blacks were eligible to vote, but weren’t registered,” stated Mrs. Ella Talley, the president of Black Women’s Caucus. ‘‘The sorority couldn’t reach all of those people so they solicited help from dQlrch members, and members of other organ izations. As a result 475 people were registered in time for the next election. The unity of these solicitors eventually developed as the Black Women’s Caucus. Today, Black Women’s Caucus is not strictly a political establishment, but one with varied ideals. However, when the Caucus endorses a political can didate, Mrs. Talley re vealed, “the organization Preparation For Parenthood Course Set A “Preparation For Pa renthood” course, designed to help parents-to-be pre pare for the birth and care of their child, will be of fered by the Greater Carol ines Chapter of the Ame rican Red Cross. The course provides in formation on labor and delivery, exercises, nutri tion, and caring for your baby. A “class reunion” is held after the baby is born. The Red Cross "Prepara tKJr For Parenthood” course consists of seven two-hour sessions. The course meets on Febvruary 7, 9, 14 & 16 from 7-9 p.m. Mary Carmichael will be the instructor. The course will also be held in March, meeting on the same Mon day and Wednesday nights, from 7-9 p.m. Dot Heaslip will be the instructor. The classes meet at the Red Cross, 2425 Park Rd. The cost is $10 per couple. To enroll in the course, call the Red Cross, 376-1661 - Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. -5 p.m. does not think ‘black or white’ politics. We seek human politics, those po liticians who are concerned about the total commun ity.” bhe explained the organ ization also works with the Health Center, assists with bloodmobiles, and other community services. “We have assisted with high school competency test workshops across the city,” Mrs. Talley added. Since the initiation of these workshops, statistics prove -black high school students have improved their test scores considerably. Not only does the Black Women’s Caucus support high school programs, but they work with local col leges as well. The organ ization is presently in volved with the Afro American Arts Center at UNC-Charlotte and its pre sentations about the Afro American womans past and present lifestyles. Mrs. Talley emphasized the Black Woman’s Caucus is not comprised of any one classified personality. Edu cational and financial sta tus doesn’t matter. “We are a cross section of pro fessional, non-profession al, educators, and all other titles,” she informed. “We come from all areas of town with one intention in mind.” That intention, according to Mrs. Talley, is to confront the problems that arise in the black community. Several committees have been formed within the People Can Depression People can fight depres sion, according to an in dustrial counselor. “Depression is probably the most widespread emo tional problem that people have,” says Charles A. Shaw, pastoral counselor for R. J. Reynolds Indus tries, Inc. Shaw says the condition is characterized by feelings of hopelessness, worthless ness and negative thoughts about oneself. It can range from mild, “the blues,” to severe, and can even lead to suicide - the 10th lead ing cause of death in the United States. Shaw says positive thinking and real istic expectations about life can help bring you out of the dumps. Black Women’s Caucus to pay close attention to the several situations that arise. Some of these com mittees are Political Ac tion, Education, Publicity, Membership, Issues and Policy and Voter Registra tion. The Black Women’s Cau cus which is open to any woman at least 18 years old, uses a large portion of its income to support the Afro-American Culture Center, the United Negro College Fund, the Legal Defense Fund and provides scholarships through the McCrorey YMCA. Every fourth Sunday this group of about 60 active women meets at the Green ville Center, 1330 Spring Street, to implement ways they can improve society. Mrs. Talley noted the Black Women’s Caucus concentrates heavily on the youth of Mecklenburg County. “We believe in the youth, and want To educate them about teenage pro blems such as pregnancy,” she expressed. Mrs. Talley and other members of Black Women’s Caucus do not want their services to bene fit only Mecklenburg County. Therefore, they are working to set up Caucuses in other coun ties. “All it takes is a group of women sincerely saying ‘I care and I am willing to give my time,”’ Mrs. Talley cited.
