The Negative uy reresa Simmons Post Managing K#Uf • The closeness of twins is . predictable: “l feel my - twin’s pain and sorrow. When I cry my twin usually cries also,” is one statement made by twins during a recent Post twin survey. In recent articles it was assessed that perhaps this closeness can be associated with matching hereditary makeup or similar environ mental factors. In addition to the more positive and pleasurable instances' of being a twin there is also the negative. Coupled with these negative aspects is that fine line as to whe ther being a twin actually causes physical or mental weiecis. ^'Identical twins may often be afflicted with hereditary diseases such as diabetes or sickle cell anemia. But one expert reports that “Once safely through in fancy, it is the big ex ception for both members of an identical pair to de velop the same serious ail ment at the same time or soon thereafter...such as major heart diseases, com mon cancer or pneu minia.” Other than the physical ailments twins may suffer either together or apart are the emotional ones. One expert suggests however: Seriously disturbed twins as a whole are no more representative of twins than seriously disturbed singly-born individuals are typical of all other persons.” , Am brain Scheinfield au thor of ‘Twins and Super twin” states: “Even when the twins saw each other as the chief cause of their (mental) difficulties, we must still remember that most persons under analy sis are beset by hostilities or unnatural attachments Gretchen (1) and Gary Rost are fratern al twins who feel that twinship is not a competitive bore. Sometimes, however, I I IIIMIBI ■■ fby ,®re, treated alike, despite their individuality. (Photo: Teresa Simmons) (or win) to persons close to them; so it should not be surprising when a dis turbed twin's feelings strongly center on the other twin/’ Here are problems twins may face, however, as a result of being a twin: jealousy, competition, hostility and overattach ment. The fight for indi viduality, sexual involve ment and other difficulties arises from the fact that two people have been born together and reared closely as one unit, researchers report. Twins surveyed by The Post revealed a variety of negative conclusions of being a twin. While having someone to be with you, at times it can be “...a pain" one twin wrote. “Always having to dress alike when you were kids,” was another negative note. “Mom treats us alike,” re marked a male fraternal twin who has a female twin. Another twin comment ed: "One of the disadvan tages is ALWAYS being compared with the other” and still other twins had the same complaint. “Always being compared with your twin... judging.” One female with a twin brother had a unique pro blem: “Since my twin is male sometimes boys or girls- will not become friends with me if he or she is a good friend of my twin’s and the same goes for him.” These complaints do not suggest that twins have more serious emotional or physical problems than singletons. On the con trary. many of those bom without a twin may face the same problems with sisters or brothers. As far as being seriously disturbed by the negative factors of being a twin, researchers still report: ’ “...there is little real evi dence that twinship of itself is the predominant factor in serious emotional mal adjustment unless the indi vidual is initially unstable and-or unless the environ ment in or outside the home is sufficiently adverse so that even a singleton might become neurotic.” Dr. Cole Is Guest TL_1 _ Lecturer At Seminar Here a con sens us that the current emphasis in science and engineering in the United States is inadequate to maintain this country’s preeminence in science and technology, according to Dr. Thomas W Cole Jr., president of West Virginia State University. Cole also stated that a national agenda is needed regarding the future pro sperity and international position of the U.S. "Ade quate preparation of all citizens in fields of mathe matics, science and tech nology is essential to main taming the nation’s econo mic strength, military se curity, international lead ership....in a....technolo gical society.” A native Texan, Cole re ceived his doctorate in or ganic chemistry from the University of Chicago He will also lecture to a chemistry class on Febru ary 9, at 9 p.m., in room 305 -Davis Science Hall.
