Church News Briefs ■ The Source Will Sponsor Gospel Music Workshop Here Next Week By Teresa Simmons Post Managing Editor A Gospel Music Work shop under the direction of Willie Eva Smith will be held at Second Calvary Baptist Church, 114 Nelson Ave. This workshop is be ing sponsored by the Source. Mrs. Smith will direct the workshop August 22-26 at 7 p.m. A live concert will be given Saturday, August 27, also at Second Calvary Baptist Church. Rev. Dr. Lemar Foster, host pastor. Author of the best selling book “Oh Sing Unto the Lord,” Mrs. Smith has traveled extensively shar ing her musical knowledge and talents directing va rious workshops. She is an alumnae of Clark College in Atlanta, Ga., graduating with a bachelor’s degree in music. She has completed graduate work in voice, organ and music education at Florida A&M University and San Francisco State University. Kelly Alexander Jr. will be the guest speaker. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kelly Alexander Sr. and is married to the former Veronica Motsepe of Qa rankuwa, South Africa. He is a member of Friendship Baptist Church. As an alumnus of the University of North Carol ina at Chapel Hill Alex ander received both his A.B. and Political Science (1970) and his Master’s in Public Administration f1973). Rev. L. D. Parker .30th anniversary He is vice president of Alexander Funeral Home, Inc., which was founded by his grandfather over 70 years ago. He has instruct ed social science subjects at colleges and univer sities around the state. He has also written and traveled extensively in the dual capacity as Execu tive Vice President of the United States Youth Coun cil and as a member of the NAACP National Board of Directors. Active in the civil rights movement since the age of nine, Alexander now chairs the National NAACP Economic Development Commitee; the Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship Selection Committee, and is president of the Char lotte Branch NAACP and Vice President of North Carolina State Confer ence of the NAACP. Robert Leak, pastor of New St. John Baptist Church, 2000 St. John Rd., will deliver the sermon “Let Jesus Fix It” Sun day, August 21, during the morning worship hour. At 6:30 p.m. 100 women will be dressed in white during a program spon sored by the Missionary Department. This program is entitled “One Hundred Women in White.” Guest speaker will be Rev. Ann McClain, asso ciate minister of New St. John Baptist Church. The public is cordially invited to attend and receive a blessing. CLEMENT MEMORIAL The Progressive Wo men's Club of Clement Me morial AME Zion Church held a special program entitled “The Parable of the Ten Virgins.” This pro gram was held last Sunday, the first effort of these young ladies. A play was given por traying the ladies within the parable - five wise ones and the five foolish ones, Veronica Smith was Mis iress oi ceremonies. Others participating in the program included: Veroni ca Smith, president of the Progressive Women’s Club; Donnie Love, vice president; Katrina Mills, secretary; Lydia Kennedy, treasurer; Vivian Bing, first chaplain; Joyce Zim merman, second chaplain; Cynthia Brown, chairman of the sick committee; and Lillie Mae Price, advisor. The following people also partldpted in the program (they are not members of the Progressive Women’s Club): Antonnelle Love, Sharon Mills, Warren Welch, Russell Smith, Tony Witherspoon and Glenn Gerald. SINAI The Hymn Choir No. 2 of Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, 1243 West Blvd. will celebrate its 50th Golden Anniversary Sun day, August 20, at 3 p.m. Choirs from within the city and outside of Char lotte will be present. Special guests for the day will be the St. Paul Com munity Baptist Church, the choir and congregation of the church, and the pastor. Rev. R. M. Young. Pastor Norman E. NEW LIFE BAPTIST Members, friends and re latives will converge Sun day, August 21, at New Life Baptist Church, 3030 Allen Rd., to honor Rev. Danna K. Martin for one year of service as pastor and founder of the church. Rev. Tommy Davis, pastor of Shiloh Institution al Baptist Church, will de liver the message. Dinner will be served from 1:30 2:30 p.m. Rev. A. B. Sut ton, pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, will pre side. Rev. Martin remembers the times when his mu sical talents were used within a R&B soul group. “But God had other plans for my life,” he stated. On June 6, 1978, he preached his initial sermon at his home church, Second Cal vary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Lemar Foster. He is the son of the late Rev. C. D. Martin and Mrs. Doretha Martin. Many were present at the initial sermon to see the son fol low in the steps of hia Kelly Alexander Jr. .Salem speaker father. Rev. Martin also has one brother, Ted, who is minister of music at Second Calvary. Now that Rev. Martin has received his license from Dr. Foster he accept ed an assignment from the Lord with the determin ation and goal for winning souls. He preached one year in Fort Mill, S.C. “But then God had other plans for me,” Rev. Mar tin began. “On August 9, 1981 under the guidance of God the New Life Baptist Church was founded with about 25 people.” Soon the congregation .. moved to worship in the Metrolina Funeral Home where Herman Johnson is the president. Within one year a new piano, a church bus was purchased, organizations and auxiliaries were formed. And more impor tantly more than 150 souls came unto the Lord. Rev. Martin delivers in spiring messages over the “You Can Be An Over comer” broadcast on WQCC Monday through Friday from 9:15-9:30 a.m. The church now has moved into a church building in the Allen Hill community. Members also purchased four acres of land off West Blvd. Monday night Bible classes are held at the church; Wednesday night prayer service, and Friday night intercessory prayer is held. “My goal is to train people 40 -be more lilge Jesus and rightly divide the word of truth,” Rev.
