Another Thanksgiving
—holiday hag come and
gone, but the fun and spe
cial way the day was spent
will linger with many
Charlotteans. The Post
talked to several commun
ity people to find out what
was different about this
Thanksgiving compared to
those celebrated in the
past.
ror Ms. Mae Orr, it was
a trip to the home of Millie
and Elmore Benjamin of
Pensacola, FL. “It was the
first Thanksgiving I spent
away from family, but I
thoroughly enjoyed
myself,” Ms. Orr revealed.
She and Mrs. Benjamin are
elementary school chums.
"Millie moved away when
we were in the eighth
Tfsae;" ms. orr ex
plained. She pointed out
they always kept close con
tact and Mrs. Benjamin
has visited Ms. Orr in
Charlotte a few times.
“However, I had never
gone to Pensacola to visit
her. I was there Thanks
giving Day and we had a
very nice dinner. However,
the holiday was really just
beginning for the two long
time frinds. They left
Pensacola the Friday after
Thanksgiving and started
for New Orleans to attend
the Southern and Gram
bllng College football
game.
‘I had never been in a
crawd Qf_over 60.000 black
people and it was excit
ing," she exclaimed. Ms.
Orr even had the oppor
tunity to see presidential
candidate Jesse Jackson
who also attended the
game. One who admires
the game of the pigskin
Ms. Orr and the Benja
mins decided to stay in
New Orelans long enough
to see the New Orleans
Saints beat the Minnesota
Vikings 17-16
"It was the first time I
attended a professional
football game." One fac
tor which made the Saints
Vikings game a sure
thriller was that former
Charlottean David Way
mer was on the winning
side. 1
While many Charlotteans
ate turkey to the pitter
patter of rain against their
roofs, Ms. Orr was in
Pensacola enjoying
‘‘blooming flowers and
snow-white sand.” She
stated, “I had a fantastic
time.”
Ana while it s always
good to see family and
friends, Mrs. Orr admitted
she was not ready to return
to the Queen City. The
mother of one, Ms. Orr is a
health instructor with the
Charlotte-Mecklenburg -
School Syatem and la the
owner of Omnia Gift Shop,
3201-D Beattiea Ford Road.
&nc ana bnaron Harris
alaor lived a Tha nksghrtng
which they will never for
get. It was the first Thanks
giving they spent as a
married couple. Sitting in
his office at North Carol
ina Mutual Life Insurance
Company, Eric happily re
called the day. “It was
very nice," he pointed out.
"My wife, Sharon, fixed a
delicious dinner."
Though Eric has always
enjoyed Thanksgiving din
ners in the past, he men
tioned this one was
especially good. “It seems
Sharan._put something
special into every dish be
cause it was our very first
Thanksgiving since being
married,” Eric continued.
Another reason Thanksgiv
ing was special was be
cause Eric’s mother’s fun
eral was the day before. “It
made me realize how
thankful I should be to have
my wife,” Eric spoke.
Spending the day with
the Ham»~ were Loretta
Manago, Gary Mumfohd,
Peggy Sims and Bart
Crawford. “We served on
our very beat china which
we received aa a wedding
gift,” laughed Harris. For
him nothing was better
than consuming a lot of
food and football and shar
ing the day with his wife
and best friends.
