General Baptist Association To Honor Dr. JJB, Humphrey

You may think that the Olympics
are over but at Amay James Pres
byterian Church the Olympics will
begin October 90. Entitled the
Churchmen's Fall Olympics, the
event will begin at 9:30 a.m. and last
until 4:30 p.m., Saturday, October
20.
- Sponsored by the Men's Council
Group the Olympic events will be
held at the Amay James Park
andRecreation Center.
Pre-registration donation is $2 per
person. At 1 p.m. a free lunch will be
served.
The fun, however, comes in the
games. Representatives from
churches will be able to compete in
events like checkers, softball throw,
the 90 and 100 yard dash, horse
shoes, basketball, arm wrestling,
table tennis and more.

Annual Recognition Banquet 7 p.m.
Friday, October 12 at the Holiday
Inn Convention Center, 3815 North
TryonSt.
Dr. J.B, .Humphrey will be
honored on this night for his more
than 35 years as pastor of First
Baptist Church-West and 14 years as
moderator of MGBA aa well aa for
his dedication to the cause of Christ.
Attorney Patricia Russell Mc
Cloud of San Antonio, TX, will be the
key-note speaker. A graduate of
Howard University School of Law
and Kentucky State University, Ms.
McCloud is articulate, substantive
and provides thought-provoking
messages.

good music, fellowship, speaking

will be given by Mayor Harvey
Gantt and others.
Also the session will observe its
annual Fashion Show and Contest,
“Fashion with a Touch of Class” on
Saturday evening, 5 p.m., October 6
at West Charlotte High School
Auditorium. All seats are free and
• the funds that will be reported by the
contestants will go to the J.M.
Kennedy Scholarship Fund.
This fashion show is being
sponsored by the Youth Depart
ment; Antiooette Dunlap president
and Percie M. Norman, Youth
Supervisor. Contestants include:
Dianna Fant, Dawn Heard, Virginia
Woodley,, Cherly Cunningham,
Mario Featberson, Jonta Russell,
Iris Everette, Joyce Gurley, Arvona
Spivey, Missy Williams, and Susan
Evans.
The Association gives two $500
scholarships per year to worthy
students.
Sessions of the 63rd MGBA will be
held each evening at 7 p.m., October
7-11.
All sessions will be highlight—i
with good gospel music, preaching
and addresses. Services win be held
at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 733
East Trade St, Rev. Dr. A.B. Sutton,

regular worship service at II a.m.
will be led by Rev. A. B. Sutton,
pastor of the church.
Dinner will be held at 1:30 p.m.
and at 3 p.m. the Interdenomina
tional Mass Choir will be in con
cert.
During the intermission Ebene
zer’s Homecoming queen and king
will be crowned.
This year marks the fifth Home
coming celebration at the church.
Rev. Sutton began the event at the
church. “This is like an Ebene
zer family reunion,” Rev. Sutton
commented. "It is one time a year
when we touch base and contact
individuals who have either come
through Ebenezer or Ebenezer Has
in some way touched their lives.”
