Ralrigh - A little faUnd firi was

Western Carolina Center in Mor
ganton. The child was not respond
ing to any of the lights, colors and
pictures that are used as a stimuli fn
such- vision tests. The staff then '.
remembered that the child loved her
foster grandmother, Lucy Duck
worth, and showed more reaittoh
when Lucy was around. When Lucy
came into the room, the child re
sponded to her voice and movements
and the staff was able to document
the dbtance and angle of her btind
Mhmie Roper volunteers 30 hours
a week as a foster grandparent and
still returns to the Western Carolina
Center every Sunday to play tha
piano for church services in the
cottages. She also volunteers time to
assist In feeding the residents at
supper, and she says she enjoys It
all.
Sunshine Gibbs feeds, cares for,
and entertains her foster grand
children. She volunteers 30 hours df
sendees week, making stuffed toys
and decorations for the children’s
wheelchairs. She also provides
shamrocks or elves for St. Patrick’s
Day, heart-shaped pillows for Va
lentine’s Day, Mack cat decorations
for Halloween and Jay Santa
Clauses for Christmas.
These are Just s few of the special
volunteers in the Poster Grand
parent Program at the Western
Carolina Center, for tha (nasally

caring will be recognized on Sep
tember 13 whdb they are honored at
the Morganton Community House as
part of the celebration commemora
ting the 30th anniversary ef the
Poster Grandparent Program. Chil
dren in the projects are IS years of :

care and training, and are referred
to the program by mental health
professionals. Mott of theea children
are mentally retarded, autisdc,
abused, In trouble at home or with
the law, and live in state mental
health and mental retaliation
centers..
To further honor their dedication,
Governor Jamee 0. Martin has pro
claimed September lfes as foster
Grandparent Month in North Caro
lina in order to pay special tri
bute to the spirit of these special
volunteers. In Ms proclamation, the
Governor stated that "foster grand
parents make a real difference in
the lives of these special children.
The children and older adults learn
and play together, and most im
portantly share love and carb*. In
