Makes Halloween A Treat The Great Pumpkin - and dozens of other fancy pumpkins carved for a contest October 30 - will launch Halloween festivities at Presbyte rian Hospital. On .Halloween, both the hospital and Presbyterian CarePlus Imme diate Care Center in Matthews will help make the night a little safer by again offering free X-rays of treats. Dozens of pumpkins carved by the hospital’s employees are expected for the October 30 contest in the hospital cafeteria. Judges for the event will be Charlotte Observer food writer Edie Low. Harrison, WPCQ medical reporter Amy Shaw - and the Great Pumpkin himself For 18 years the Great Pumpkin has delivered candy on Halloween to children in hospitals during the holiday. mck-or-treaters may stop by the hospital’s main entrance on Hawthorne Lane from 6-9 p.m. Costumed junior volunteers will greet them in the main lobby and take the treats to the Radiology Department to be X-rayed for metal objects. Matthews area residents will find Presbyterian CarePlus across from the Depot at the corner of Sam Newell Rd. and Hwy. 51. Goblins are invited from 6-8 p.m. The X-rays detect only metal objects, so parents will want to inspect candy and other treats carefully. It’s best to allow only wrapped cnadies or treats North State To Host Functions Spend an evening with North State on Sunday, October 26, and get acquainted with the law enforce ment organization's two candidates for queen. The evening will commence at Kings 4 Queens from 8 p.m. until. North State Law Enforcement Association will also be sponsoring its 12th annual black officers' ball on Saturday, November 29, from 9 p.m. to'l a.m. at the Charlotte Civic Center. Live entertainment for the ba|t*-wlll be provided by Z-Volt. Donations are $8. Proceeds from both of these evojts will go toward NSLEA’s scnoiarsmp program ana us retrain ing of membership. New Street Signs Installed Beginning this week, new street name signs with large letters and the City’s crown logo will be in stalled in uptown Charlotte. Accord ing ,fo Robert N. Pressley, director of'the Charlotte Department of Transportation, the installation of the new signs, “should help alle viate problems visitors experience in trying to find street locations in the uptown.” The new signs are part of a gradual change in street signs that were designed to improve traffic flow and safety in Charlotte. Also part-of this signage program are large overhead signs to be placed on major thoroughfares to provide advanced notification of major intersections. Sidewalk Seminar Sunshine LAP Manufacturers will have a sidewalk seminar in front of Wayne’s Supermarket (located at the University Park Shopping Center) on Saturday, October 25, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Romaine and Earl Worth, along with radio personalities and gospel recording artist, Stanley Alexander will be present at the event.
