Taxpayers Extension Greensboro - Some taxpayers who need additional time beyond the April 15 due date for individu el tax returns should request a four-month extension of time to file, according to the Internal Rev enue Service. To obtain the four-month exten sion, a taxpayer should complete a Form>868, "Application for Auto matic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Re tum," and mail this to the Internal Revenue Service Center, Mem phis, TN 38501. Form 4868 may be filed on or before April 15 and is available at all IRS offices and at many public libraries and poet of fices . "The extension to file a tax re turn is not an extension of time to pay any tax that may be due," said John E. Burke, IRS district direc tor of North Carolina. On Form 4866, a tentative esti mate of the year's taxes must be made nM airy halance due must be submitted with the form. Burke cautioned that if the unpaid tax is more than 10 percent, a penalty may be assessed for late payment unless the taxpayer can show rea sonable cause for not paying the tax when due. The penalty is one percent per month on the unpaid balance up to a maximum of 25 percent. Interest is also assessed on any unpaid balance. Taxpayers who wish to take an Individual Retirement Arrange ment (IRA) deduction for 1986 must make their IRA contribution by April 16,1987, whether or not they have been granted an exten sion to file, Burke added. Taxpayers who are granted the automatic extension must file Farm 1040 and also must compute their own tax. This percentage reflects an in crease of more than $6 million on a total dollar volume of almost $26 million. Contributing to this increase was the inclusion of the purchas ing statistics of several businesses new to Kraft, including Duracell Inc. Existing Kraft units also had significantly higher results. "Many of our operating units, particularly the Foodservice and Dairy groups, made outstanding progress in the minority purchas ing area during 1986," said Lowell M.
