With a combination of talent and perseverance, «ma«hln| SVOOeaS. - iha up and coming band, Valence it sore to be a Valence: Chamotte's New Sound By LaShun Lawson Poet Staff Writer The New Sound In Charlotte "Valence" is a local pop music group that formed on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University in 1980. The six member musical unit consists of a four piece in strumentation and two lead voc alist. Charles Head, vocalist and percussion, John Harvell, base and background vocalist, Henry Gilmore, lead vocalist and busi ness manager, Kevin Williams, drummer, Donald Ethridge, key boards and music director, and Robert Woods, keyboard and gui tar. The band has been together for 7 years and all the members are from the Carolines. The popular group launched SummerStage '87 at NCNB Pla za, the group's appearance was the first of a series of lunchtime programs and concerts in uptown Charlotte. "Our performance in uptown Charlotte gave us expo sure to a variety of people of all ages; we had the chance to expose our new sound," explained Hen ry Gilmore. Valence is noted for their strong display of popular music, energetic stage act and original sound. They have appeared as the opening act for concerts in the Southeast and have made many appearances at colleges and uni versities in the Southern areas including Georgia Tech, Georgia Southern, ASU, Wake Forest, North Carolina State, and their Alma Mater Johnson C. Smith University. This Charlotte based group is.available for nationwide performances. Valence has also appeared in several oC Charlotte's hot spots including Spordio's and St. Mark's. Valence recently opened a business, "New Sound Produc tion", a new rehearsal studio that is available for rental to oth er bands. "Our goal is to have a record ing contract by the end of 1987, ” Gilmore said, “we are getting closer to seeing our goal become reality," he continued.
