j LLI L13 LlJI ^Bmfcfear INTRODUCTION ,, ““f'.uTT1 many "a01101" from the people of Hto day. At the Jesus was probably less than two years old. the Word was out that the One who would become King of the Jews was born, ana the reactions were mixed. Herod wanted to wipe Him out; the wise-men worshiped Him. From birth to death Jesus' life was not a bed of roses. After the birth of Jesus. Joseph and Mary decided to stay in Bethle hem. They were poor, as seen from the offering given when Jesus was taken to the temple. In order not to force Mary to travel Imme diately after the birth of Jesus. Joseph probably got a Job In Bethle hem and then decided to stay on rather than Interrupt his wage earning activities. Mary , Joseph and Jesus were six miles away when theWlse-Men came to Jerusalem. I THE LESSON was bom In the town of Bethlehem In Judea, during the time Terod was king. Soon afterward, some men who studied the une from the East to Jerusalem and asked. "Where is the baby be king of the Jews?" We saw his star when It came up In the id we have come to worship him." When King Herod heard was very upset, and so was everyone else In Jerusalem. He ogether all the chief priests and the teachers of the law and hem, "Where will the Messiah be bom?" "In the town of Be th in Judea." they answered. "For this Is what the prophet 'Bethlehem In the land of Judea, you are by no means the the feeding cities of Judah; Car from you will come a leader II guide my people Israel'.’ rod called the visitors from the East to a secret meeting and 'ut from them the exact time the star had appeared. Then he cm to Bethlehem with these Instructions: "Go and make a search for the child; and when you find him let me know so oo may go and worship him. And so they left, and on their ■y MW the same star they had seen In the East. When they how happy they were, what Joy was theirs! It went ahead of ntU It stopped over the place where the child was. They went : house, and when they saw the child with his mother Mary, lelt down and worshiped him. They brought out their gifts of antlncenae, and myrrh, and presented them to him. Then turned to their country by another road, since God had them In a dream not to go back to Herod." (Matthew 2:1-12) > not know how many Wise-Men there were. Tradition holds sre were three, since they gave three categories of gifts to Je ’e do not know where they came from. Some have speculated *erBla, Babylon, or Arabia. All we know is that they came le East. People known as magi or wlse-men were skilled In llfierent areas such as philosophy, politics, science, astrolo .t'gy. medicine, etc., but we have no specific Information regarding 2 these who came to honor the new bom King. 2, Although we do not know how many there were, their place of ori *gln. or their particular expertise, we do know that Wlse-men were £ highly respected. These had some on a special mission, to worship £the King of the Jews. Notice some distinctive things about these Wise jn men; (1) They were willing to be Inconvenienced In order to search JJbr the King, (2) They did not consider themselves to have too much ^status fa^search forHlm. even while He was a babe. (3) They were not ^ur colors for Christ becauselmme believe Urnt Hlm^ioeso^ ■fcnake sense? They took a Journey across countries. Are we willing to across town? They interrupted months of their lives. Are we will ?lng to Interrupt popular television programs? They testified before a *;klng. Are we wilting to witness before influential people? *• wise men sun sees Jesus, seeking Jesus requires more than seek ling a babe to worship, for Jesus has grown up. Seeking Jesus today 'Involves seeking His will. His attitudes. His love. His character, His Horace, His morality. His submission to the Father and then living fuiat out of His fullness. Are we "wise?" Not only do wise men today still seek Jesus, but they also still run the "Herods." These Wise - men had two Influences tugging at King Herod commanded them to report back to him; but God not to. They saw Herod face to face, but not God. Being a king, Herod could Inflict severe punishment on them for his command. [will always have the Herods trying to prevent Jesus from own and popular. With whom will we side, Herod or men? These Wise-men chose to Ignore Herod and to it sounds easy at first, but how do we handle "power plays came in a lot of difficult forms. Each of these a different "Herod." Which one of these tends to trip us up? a) " b) Traditional pressure? c) Financial pressure? d) e? e) Elite pressure? as then, God wants courageous people who are willing to be sentenced, willing to give valuables away, willing to take risks, willing to obey Him In spite of threats. Uncle Joe had this to asy; "Christ said. 1 am the Way. the Truth, and the life.1" Then he asked me. "Why have anything else?" Then he aakl. "If the Lord called me to cany the Word. I'd carry the Ward!" Now. brother, that la my determination. Preach the Wordl Carry the Word! It doesn't matter artist you think about me or the Word. The Word la the Word and you cannot charge It God's Word wlfl never paaa away. It'D be ■landing when you long, robbing devlla. who go In the name of preachers, are dead and tn MefB Near you let that soak In. Go In the average church and you never hear about Christ dying for sMiera and that Christ la tha sinner's only hope. H la always some program or somethtrw else that la magrrtOed. Or aa Brother Shelton used to say. man U deified and Christ la humanized. I know that Is so. If I'd go In the average church In thla town and tell how God, saves a sinner In the dust and ashes of repentance, the preachers and congregation* would brand me craiy and throw me out. Thus salth the Lord: Curse be the man that trustcth In man. and meketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departed! from die LORD," (Jer. 17:5). Are you going to beheve what the LORD says about thia pagan celebration or will you trust the arm of the flesh which la pagan tradition? There la no neutral ground. You are either going to come out of It or re bel against God and go on in it. Christmas la Idolatry." (I Cor. 10:14). Then listen again: "And he said unto them, ye arc they which justify yuursehrcs before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which Is highly esteemed among men la abomi nation In Die sight of Ood." (Luke 16:15). Now you ' think seriously about these things, my Mends, and I plead with you to take a stand for the truth. Isa paid adrsr m8B5Si 333-0768 T HiS EXPERTISm'^:4fo'#t.
