THE HOT EVENTS Lionel Hampton America's goodwill ambassa dor of music, Lionel Hampton, Is coming to Greensboro. The virtuoso vlbraphonlst will be the featured performer at the annual dinner/concert of the A&T University Foundation, to be held on Friday, October 14 at 7 p.m. In the Holiday Inn Four Seasons. It will be a big band perfor mance, as Hampton will conduct a group of 17 musicians and noted Jazz singer, Shirley Jones. As excited as A&T Foundation officials are about Hampton's appearance In Greensboro, they are equally pleased that pro ceeds from the event will be used to Inaugurate the Lionel Hampton Endowed Scholar ships In the performing arts at A&T. "The support of education In the performing arts has long been one of Hampton's inter ests," said Dr. Alvin V. Blount Jr., president of the Foundation. "We sore pleased to have him join us in m^ng these scholarships possible." Hampton's outstanding musi cal career spans more than five decades, and has earned for him national and International ac colades as an humeuiltarlan and ambassador of goodwill. He became part of the first major Integrated jazz band over 50 years ago. when he and the late Teddy Wilson opened with the Benny Goodman Quartet. Hampton was bom in Louis ville, Kentuclqf. the son of a pia nist and singer. He learned to play dmms from a Franciscan nun, and by age 14 he was play ing with several bands In the Midwest. Known as "King of the Vibes" and "Master of the Drums," Hampton has been much hon ored for his contributions to the world of jazz. He has Influenced many musicians. Including Er- i nle Royal, Joe Newman, Shadow Wilson and Irving Ashby. I The A&T Foundation gener ates development, scholarship , and enhancement funds for the 1 university.
