BUSINESSrH/S WEEK Thursday, November 2, 1989 - THE CHARLOTTE POST - Page 3A Caribbean Cooking A.C. TURNER Post Staff Writer Charlotte has a place to go to experience the culinary brilli ance of the the West Indies. Caribbean Eatables, at 901 South Kings Drive In the Kings . Court Shopping Center, serves a variety of dishes that are In fluenced by Africa, Europe and the Orient. The restaurant is owned by Leslie Reid, his mother Frelda, and his sister Pamela. The faml- ; ly Is originally from Jamaica. ; Reid said he wanted to exp>ose people to different types of cul- . sine and educate them about cul tures by creating a foreign envl- • ronment. 'There are black folks all over, not Just In America. 'Y’ou eat chicken, we eat chicken, you eat fish, we eat fish," he safd. Reid says that Caribbean Eata bles has a wider food selection. Some of the delights on their menu are jerk chicken and fish, curry chicken, beef patties, and roti. Jerk chicken Is marinated In special herbs and spices and ■ cooked over an open grill. Curry ■ chicken and rotl are dishes that are of oriental Influence. Beef patties are popular fast food Items In Jamaica. Reid said seasoning Is a constant dlffer- 'ence between Caribbean and American food. For this reason he says most Americans can not cook island food properly. "The average ■ American can't cook curry. Tliey put In too much spice," he said. At Caribbean Eatables his mother and sister do most of the cooking. First Union Merger Is Stalled By The Associated Press Questions about the lending practices of First Union Corp. In Charlotte's poor and minority .neighborhoods have delayed Its ’$849 million acquisition of Florida National Bank. The Federal Reserve Board said yesterday that it will not ap prove the merger until federal regulators take a close look at whether First Union makes ade quate loans In low- and middle- income neighborhoods. "The board does not believe that there Is sufficient Informa tion In the record at this time to allow the board to reach a final conclusion on First Union's record of helping to meet the credit needs of the communities It serves In North Carolina and Florida, Including low- and moderate-income neighbor hoods," the board said In news release Monday. It was only the second time that the Federal Reserve has blocked or postponed a proposed bank merger because of ques tions over a bank's lending prac tices. Under the Community Rein vestment Act, banks are re quired to make loans In all com munities from which they accept deposits. The act was passed to curb discrimination against low-Income and minori ty communities. Because mergers must be ap proved by the Federal Reserve, community activists have used proposed mergers as an opportu nity to challenge bank-lending p)ollcles. In a terse news release Monday night. First Union said that It Is disappointed by the delay and that It "believes that it will dem onstrate that It Is in compliance with the Community Reinvest ment Act."
