3B USA COLLINS Behind The .Scenes GOLDBERG Rosewood: It was reported as “Florida’s Race War,” but it wasn’t a was pure and sim ple mas sacre of blacks in the town called Rosewood, Florida, which was burned down by whites on one January night in 1923. It is this true story that John Singleton brings to life in his forthcoming film, “Rosewood.” Production on location in Florida was recently wrapped. The story was filmed on a site not far from the original town- •ship, which was not rebuilt. Singleton is proud of the endeavor for much more than a theatrical feat, instead for the faith the dozen or so sur vivors of the massacre have put in him to tell their story, particularly since for years the Rosewood saga is something no one has talked about and a state has covered up. The film 'will follow closely the details of ^eal events - many of which iare simply the gruesome exe- ■cution of blacks at the hands of whites. Cast members include Don Cbeadle, Esther Rolle and Ving Rhames, who co-starred with Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible. John Voight plays the only white resident of the historic black township of mostly prosperous and inde pendent blacks who on that fateful night, helps many to escape. Singleton, no doubt feels the film which is slated for release this fall will have greater impact given the grow ing racial tensions recently reported in the press. Primetime Honors: Congratulations are in order to Andre Braugher - who with the recent unveiling of nomi nations for the 48th annual Emmy Awards - pocketed two nods. The first much deserved bid is for his work in “Homicide: Life On the Street.” Braugher was also ' cited in the category of best supporting actor for his work ifa HBO’s “Tuskeegee Airmen.” Most think the acclaim for the 33-year old, Chicago born actor is long overdue. “My goal is to broaden and deepen the^ range of African American FIshburne actors on television,” Braugher said. Other nominees include A 1 f r e Woodard - supporting actress in miniseries or special, “Guillivers Travels;” Laurence Fishbume - lead actor in a miniseries or special, “'Tuskeegee Airmen;” James McDaniel - supporting actor in a drama series, “NYPD Blue;” Whoppie Goldburg - individual performance in a variety or musical program for her work as host of the 68th Annual Academy Awards; and finally Richard Pryor will square off against Danny Glover in the category, guest actor in a drama series. Pryor for his stint on “Chicago Hope,” Glover for his work on “Fallen Angels.” Chaos: The recently released “Chaos and Disorder” CD is the final installment of product to come of the artist formerly known as Prince’s 18- year union with Warner Brothers Records. The 38- year-old singer recently announced his split from the company after years of legal wrangling and much publi- ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT/The cized bitter feuds over every- thing from material to distrib ution of his label Paisley Park Records, which has reportedly lost money since its inception. In other music news, Whitney Houston is sure not to be pleased that a former boyfriend of her former publi cist has written a book about her. What’s worse is that the former boyfriend, Kevin Ammons, hasn’t had contact with the singer in over five years. Still, with the October release of the book, titled Good Girl, Bad Girl: AnJ Inside Biography of Whitney Houston, the writer claims to reveal the real story behind such topics as her sexuality and why she married Bobby Brown. My guess is he doesn’t know any more than the rest of us. By the way: You’d never know that Shaquille O’Neal has a lot more going on than just his recent signing with the Lakers in a much publicized $120 million deal. His next album, appropriately titled “Can’t Stop the Reign” is set for release in. September... Meanwhile, Whoopi Goldberg is penning a book entitled “Life’s Observations.” Thursday, July 25, 1996 w So Many x ThinjisToDo.Onl]r One PlacoTo Stay. hether you decide to get away with the family or just the two of you, the Charleston Hilton is the place to go this weekend.
