Brown will be in on Wednesday for a book signing and reading at Barnes and Noble, 4720 Sharon Road, at 7:30 p.m. Lee planning film on church bombing victim THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Filmmaker Spike Lee is in town to tackle a long-planned project, a documentary about one of the four black girls killed in th^ 1963 bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Lee’s film about 11-year-old Denise McNair will get a boost from the cooperation of her parents, 'Jefferson County Commissioner Chris McNair and his wife Maxine, who rarely talk publicly about the tragedy. “I wouldn’t be doing it now if I didn’t think there was integrity there, and it was a good thing to do at this point,” McNair said last week. McNair joined Lee during some of Saturday’s shooting, which included various sculp tures in Kelly Ingram Park commemorating civil rights demonstrations. The park is across from the historic church, scene of the Sept. 15, 1963 bombing. Lee declined interviews Saturday while working in the park. Many motorists and pedestrians in the area recog nized the diminutive director, however, and he obliged fans by signing autographs between takes. “They’ve been quite respect ful toward him working,” said Vickie Williams of Birmingham, a freelance assistant working with Lee’s crew. Lee, who arrived in Birmingham with his crew early Saturday afternoon, was expected to spend about four days in the area doing inter views and shooting film. It’s the first feature-length documentary for Lee, who is known for such movies as “Do the Right Thing,” “Malcolm X,” and “She’s Gotta Have It.” Have an entertainment idea or story?
