3B ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT/The Charlotte Post Thursday, August 15 1996 USA COLLINS Behind The Scenes Like Mother, Like Son: No one understands the troubles of controversial rapper Tupac Shakur like his WILLIAMS SHAKUR would contend that the story of her life would make a great script. Actress Jasmine Guy is one of them. So much so that she’s optioned the story of Afeni Shakur in the hopes of producing it for the silver screen. As one of the founding members of the Black Panther Party, Shakur was jailed as a political prisoner (for conspira cy) in the 60s. Serving in her own defense at a subsequent trial, she was able to win her freedom. Of course, the film will also key in on her trials and tribulations as the mother of one of the nation’s most col orful rappers - from his much publicized legal battles to bis near fatal shooting. Guy has reportedly approached Angela Bassett about taking the lead. No word yet on whether or not Bassett will oblige. Tupac Sbakur will compose tbe music for tbe film...In other film news, Universal Pictures paid a hefty sum for rights to a comedy dubbed “There Goes The Hood,” about a “white- trash” guy and his family who move into an upper-class black neighborhood. Singing the Blues: The leg endary B.B. King has made a name off the blues. Now recent court bat tles have him bat- t 1 i n g those using his name in a lawsuit brought by King’s lawyers against operators of B.B. King’s Blues Club. The suit - filed in Memphis last month - charges the Beale Street Blues Co. with failure to meet their obligation in paying King $110,000 in each of the five years since 1991 for using his name in a Memphis club and an additional $105,000 per year since 1994 for the facility at Universal Studio’s City Walk in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Beale Street maintains (in New York) that King has not lived up to his side of the deal, which includ ed making no less than four appearances a year at each club. It further alleges that King violated a clause in their agreement when he signed on to act as spokesman for a casi no 25 miles from Memphis. The clause restricted him from any public associations vrith similar venues within a 120- mile radius. If worse comes to worse. King’s name could be permanently removed from the marquee. Ladies Night: Pop singer/actress Vanessa Williams will be honored with the Lena Home Award for out standing career achievement at Don Cornelius’ Second Annual Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards which is being held on Sept. 9 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. R&B teen sensation Brandy has been named to receive tbe Aretha Franklin Entertainer of the Year Award. Meanwhile, heading up the list of those racking up nominations was Faith Evans, who scored four nominations. TLC, Monica and the duo Groove Theory trailed closely with three each. Supermodel Veronica Webb, Queen Latifah, and Peabo Bryson are set to host the show which will be aired in syndication. Switching Gears: Looks like Ice-T’s preoccupation with acting has taken a toll on his record sales. His newest CD, “Return of the Real,” has sold just 52,000 copies since it’s release six weeks ago, and so he is now touring to promote the record. But the tmth be told, he’s most excited about the TV series he has in devel opment called “Players,” about former criminals turned crime fighters. (It’s the “it takes a thief to catch a thief” premise.) Naturally, he would star in the drama he hopes to get on NBC’s fall ‘97 slate... By the Way: Picket Fences’ co-star Don-Cheadle is doing double-duty these days on the film scene with prime roles in New Line’s “Boogie Nights” and Fox’s “Volcano,” starring Tommie Lee Jones ... “Higher Learning” co-star Omar Epps has landed a 12- episode guest stint on “ER” as Dr. Dennis HOUSTON Grant, a new hospital surgical resident...Dennis Rodman makes a gust appearance as an alien on the season opener of “3rd Rock From the Sun,” September 22...And Whitney Houston receives the High Hopes Award from the Children’s Diabetes Foundation at forthcoming star-studded Carousel of Hope Ball on Oct. 25 in Beverly Hills. Rod Stewart headlines the event, but Houston will also perform. Vending Locations For SALISBURY & ROCK HILL ROCK HILL. SC Randall's Barber Shop McLaughlin's Grocery Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken 404 S.
