He believes in setting high-J er standards so that the children^ can aim higher.” ^ Williams Marines probe racist acts at camp THE ASSOCIATED PRESS JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Marine Corps ofBcials are inves tigating alleged racial discrimi nation and racial slurs reported in December by inmates at the Camp Lejeune Regional Correctional Facility. Lt. Col. Steve L. Little, a spokesman for the base, would not comment specifically on alle gations made in 1996, but did confirm that some similar allega tions were confirmed in a 1995 investigation. ‘The base immediately and thoroughly investigated all of the allegations of maltreatment of prisoners at the brig,” Little said of the 1995 case. He said it revealed inappropri ate comments were made to pris oners, brig personnel failed to prevent racial sliors in a timely manner and brig guards violated tobacco-use regulations. As a result of the 1995 case. Little said the corporal who made the comments was counseled and reassigned and additional tele phones are being installed for prisoner use. The commanding officer of the brig has ensured strict compli ance with brig procedures and operations and that training is conducted regarding the treat ment of detainees and prisoners, he said.
