Watson THE AMSTERDAM NEWS NEW YORK - With a neighborhood map and a tour book, Marcus Bey- Richards stands across from the famous ApoUo Theater on 125th Street, trying for a second to imagine what Harlem was like 70 years before the theater emerged as an institution for show casing black talent. “I’m just amazed that this theater is still here,” said Bey-Richards, 23, a tourist from Chicago, who made his first visit to Harlem earlier this week. “These landmarks are not just important places for tourists to visit. They symbolically define who we are as black people.” Bey-Richards was bom in the 1980s, long after the Apollo reached its heyday. In the 1950s, it had become the place where James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Diana Ross and the Supremes showcased their talent. But many years later, the theater had fallen into disre pair and was on the verge of being demolished before attorney Percy Sutton pur chased the Apollo for $250,000 in 1681 and launched a campaign that would revive interest in it.
